Low-key Hollywood star Idris Elba has set up home in the Sydney suburbs to begin work on George Miller’s new flick, Three Thousand Years of Longing.
Wearing shorts and a T-shirt and carrying a red beanie, the Avengers star ventured out for a Sunday morning stroll in Drummoyne and on Saturday was spotted with model wife Sabrina having lunch at Apollo in Potts Point.
The couple have kept a low profile since arriving in Sydney a few weeks ago and undergoing the mandatory two-week quarantine period.
Elba, 48, is one of the highest profile Hollywood stars to have contracted COVID-19 earlier in the pandemic.
Production on Miller’s film was due to begin in March but was pushed back due to coronavirus.
It is Miller’s first movie since Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015 and will also star Tilda Swinton.
While Byron Bay has been a hub for major productions over recent months, this is the first big film for Sydney in a while.
Little detail is known about the film with Miller in December saying he didn’t want to “jinx” the project.
“I see the title of this film as a riddle, and it’s more or less at heart a two-hander, even though it’s way more complex than that,” he said.
“Tilda and Idris are the two characters at the centre of this thing. I can’t even decide what genre it is, to be honest. And that’s a good thing. I like to think in these days that to have a chance of people taking notice of what you’re doing, without being overly flamboyant, your film needs to be uniquely familiar.
“It’s a movie that is very strongly visual, but it’s almost the opposite of (Mad Max) Fury Road. It’s almost all interior and there’s a lot of conversation in it. There are action scenes, but they are by the by and I guess you could say it’s the anti-Mad Max.”
Voted the Sexiest Man Alive by People in 2018, Elba played Heimdall in the Avengers films, as well as Thor: Ragnarok. His other film credits include Prometheus, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Star Trek Beyond, Hobbs & Shaw, Cats, Molly’s Game and Zootopia.
He also voiced the character of Fluke in Finding Dory.
