Caroline Laws, the wife of veteran broadcaster John Laws, has died at age 82 after a long battle with cancer.
In a statement to The Daily Telegraph, Mr Laws, 84, said “I am lost” after losing his wife of 43 years, who he affectionately dubbed “The Princess”.
“The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming and John and the family appreciate the kindness at this very sad time,” the veteran broadcaster said.
Mrs Laws died at her home on Monday morning.
It comes four years after Mrs Laws was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer during a routine check-up despite having no symptoms.
That same year (2016), the couple had been hospitalised in Italy after falling ill with bronchial conditions on their annual holiday.
They had nine children between them from previous marriages and often spoke of their incredible love story after having met as teenagers at a dance in 1951.
They didn’t see each other for 20 years as Mrs Laws moved to the UK and they both married other people. However they eventually reconnected and were inseparable ever since. They eventually tied the knot in 1976.
“I loved her the moment I saw her. As soon as she came back into my life that was it, she was the woman and we’ve been together ever since,” Mr Laws told The Australian Women’s Weekly.
Mr Laws introduced his wife as “The Princess” on the eastern seaboard via his popular talkback radio show on the once-dominant 2UE.
Their shared love of collectable art, luxury travel, the Continent and fine living became the hallmarks of their marriage.
