House Of The Dragon may roar again, as boss flags further series

The creative team behind the much-anticipated Game Of Thrones prequel have given fans the gift they really want, just days before the first episode goes to air.

THE creatives behind Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon have already signalled a second season before the first has its global world premiere on Monday.

Showrunners Ryan J Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are hopeful the big-budget HBO fantastical drama will be a long-running thing.

“There’s certainly a vision,” Condal told News Corp Australia when asked if further seasons have been commissioned. “There is a vision, we do have a beginning, middle and end to the story as we see it, we are hoping that this season connects with an audience and we are certainly ready to make a season two if our partners at HBO and Warner Media are.”

HOTD scored a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes in 2019 and after casting and production through the global pandemic, will finally make its debut on Monday on BINGE and Foxtel at 11am.

Given the huge popularity of GOT, it is one of the most anticipated television launches in many years.

“I think this story gives the audience a wish fulfilment chance to get to know the Targaryen dynasty,” Condal explained. “And I think because Daenerys (played by Emilia Clarke) was such an iconic character in the original series and because we so felt for her and the thing that she had lost and then had been robbed of as an infant when she had been smuggled out of Kings Landing and then Dragonstone to safety across the narrow sea. She never got to know the great heights or glory or wealth or power or influence of fame of her house, all she had was this silver hair, which put a target on her back, because Robert Baratheon was trying to eliminate any other future claimants that would challenge his throne.”

He continued: “So we got a great sense of the Targaryen mythology and I think the story of the Targaryens in the original series, but this allows you to go back to the time that Daenerys was probably wistfully thinking about her whole life the time when they were in power and they had 17 dragons and they were wealthy and decadent and there were uncles and

cousins and nieces and nephews and princes and princesses. This is the story

of the Targaryens at their greatest shining glory and they don’t know it yet but

it’s right before the fall begins that leads to the end of the dynasty and Daenerys’

fate.”

Fans, Condal and Sapochnik agree, will have a lot to say about their creative decisions on House Of The Dragon.

“It is definitely a balance beam to walk,” Condal said. “I think often the fans think they know what they want until you give them something different and they realise, ‘oh yeah, that’s actually the thing that I wanted’. So I think you have to deliver on certain expectations – fidelity to the world, faithful adaptation, a continuation of the very strong tone and voice that was created and apparent in the original series, the look and feel of the show and certainly

the history of the world, the continuity of the history. It is our charge and our responsibility as the filmmakers behind this, to deliver something that does challenge expectations and does take you down roads you don’t expect to go down because if it’s only fan service, then that’s

all it is and we are not doing anything really new and interesting and that’s not

really the HBO way. It has to be challenging and unexpected and we have to be willing to take some leaps of faith along the way that maybe the fans won’t like at first, but hopefully are the right creative choices to create an interesting piece of art which I think is what everybody in our seat is trying to do, whether it’s Game Of Thrones or something else.”
