First Rekodo. Then to deal with Accor and Commbank Stadium. Now, restaurateur and celebrity chef Matt Moran is opening a new food offering at the Opera House.
Moran, with his partnership with hospitality group Solotel, will launch House Canteen on Thursday, October 13.
The site is currently trading as Opera Kitchen and is next door to the iconic Opera Bar.
The change of name and offering comes after the group won the tender to operate for three years.
“We are there for more time, so we want to give it’s own narrative. Until last year, Opera Kitchen was never ours but people thought it was because of the name,” Moran said.
“We want to give it a new identity and a new menu to go with it.”
House Canteen is open from breakfast through to late night dining options and as the name suggests, will specialise in more grab and go options for people looking for quick meals before the theatre.
Pastries and OTT doughnuts will be served during the day, while the lunch and dinner menu will feature an Asian influence with poke bowls, dumplings, rice paper rolls, sushi and Korean fried chicken.
“For so long Opera Kitchen was seen as the little brother to Opera Bar and almost copied to get market share. What we are trying to do is make the two very different. We won’t copy food from one menu to the other,” said Moran.
“No one knows this precinct like us. We’ve been here for 20 years so we are giving the people want they want.”
The news marks a busy few months for Moran who opened Barangaroo’s Japanese vinyl bar and restaurant Rekodo, to rave reviews in September.
He also was announced as culinary ambassador for Accor Stadium and also reopened North Bondi Fish after a partnership with Kepos Street Kitchen.
“We are making up for the quiet years,” Moran said.
