As riots erupt in Los Angeles and unrest continues to grip parts of the US, Hollywood comedy royalty Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman have found a welcome reprieve in Sydney as they play a role in Vivid.
The Emmy Award-winning actors and real-life couple are headlining Vivid’s closing event, Unscripted and Unfiltered, marking the first time they’ve been on stage together in conversation.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Parks and Recreation star Offerman and Will & Grace favourite Mullally didn’t shy away from talking about the chaos back home or from finding humour in the darkness.
“It’s quite depressing and we continue to make each other laugh, so that we don’t go burn down buildings or run into killing streets,” Offerman said.
“We stay in touch with our community, so that we all maintain a sense of hope in the face of fascism.”
Mullally agreed. “We had the news on at certain times in the hotel … and then I was like ‘we gotta find an Antiques Roadshow’,” she joked.
The pair, who have been married for 25 years, credit the strength of their relationship to making it their top priority.
“Our marriage, we make that our top priority … one subset of that would be never choose a Marvel movie over your marriage,” Offerman laughed.
“He’s not really kidding,” Mullally added.
“Like we’ve somehow managed to never be apart for more than two weeks in 25 years except recently. I think it was more like three weeks a couple of times last year when we were both working in different countries … it’s crazy that we’ve managed to pull that off. That really is key.”
Their romantic origin story is as charming as their on-stage personas. They first met during a small theatre production in Los Angeles.
“It was the force of his character that attracted me,” Mullally said. “He was so different from any other guy that I dated or anything, because he was very secure with himself and he kind of knew who he was and everything, and also he was very funny and sweet.”
Offerman added, “Megan has promised me that we will consummate our marriage for our 45th anniversary, so I’m sticking on.”
While in Sydney, the couple have been embracing the local lifestyle.
“We love the zoo, but I think when we went to Luna Park the other time it was closed, so we’re gonna go back there. Luna Park and Harry’s Cafe de Wheels,” Offerman said.
Next on the agenda is a cross-country trip in their beloved Airstream.
