Home And Away newcomer, Courtney Miller, lives a fascinating double life.
When she is not shooting scenes for one of Australia’s most iconic soap operas, the
22-year-old, who has a psychology degree, volunteers her time at Lifeline.
“I’ve got a Bachelor of Science Psychology — an undergraduate degree — and I’m still finishing a postgraduate Diploma of Rehabilitation Counselling, and then I volunteer for Lifeline as well,” Miller said.
“I’m probably working two to three hours per week on the phones helping people through crisis.”
Miller, who joined the cast of Summer Bay as Bella last November, credits her new gig on the show for helping her find emotional balance.
“This job (on Home And Away) has really helped me to be positive for most of my day, and then give that little bit of time at Lifeline to those people who really need it and I wish that they could have the same life that I have.”
She even likens her volunteer work to performing.
“I become a different person, I really do,” she said.
“It’s almost like acting, I become ‘Professional Courtney’ on the phones, and so if they are in really bad shape, I’m on the ball asking ‘what have you taken’ and that kind of thing.”
“You do so much training for it and you’re so ready for it, it’s like paramedics and nurses, you’re just there and you’re in it.”
Home And Away returns to Channel 7 on February 18.
