Home And Away hunk Jake Ryan is on a mission to raise as much cash as possible for sick kid Eleanor Oakley.
The daughter of Ryan’s close friends Jacqui and Rob Oakley needs $300,000 for lifesaving treatment in the US 18 month after she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of childhood cancer, stage four high risk neuroblastoma.
“This is a moment where I don’t mind social media,” Ryan told Confidential after sharing a plea for help on his Instagram.
“Anyone that has an audience hopefully should be doing more of this kind of stuff. It certainly puts life into perspective.
“The little things that might worry me from day to day, you hear these stories and these families are superheroes. They are the ones that are celebrities, and the doctors and nurses who are making a difference.”
The three-year-old received the all clear from doctors in April after undergoing intensive chemo, surgery to remove tumours and her right kidney, a stem cell transplant, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.
Two weeks ago, at her three month post treatment follow-up scan, a new tumour was discovered and she was diagnosed with a central nervous system neuroblastoma relapse.
The treatment — the 8h9 antibody — isn’t available in Australia.
Just three hospitals in the US offer treatment for the disease, with one quoting $2.2 million and the cheapest at $300,000.
So far the family has raised $256,165 via a Go Fund Me page online with any funds not used for the treatment to be donated to the Children’s Cancer Council.
“Her only chance is to get her over to the US so we are doing whatever we can to help Eleanor and give our mate a hand,” said Ryan, who himself will soon become a father for the first time.
“Human nature really shines at times like this for little Eleanor. The family is completely blown away by the generosity and support of people.”
