High fashion hats more fascinating for Spring racegoers

High fashion hats and oversized headbands remain the top trends racegoers are opting for to complete their outfits, with fascinators taking a back seat at this year’s Spring Racing Carnival.

Sydney’s Spring Racing Carnival remains one of the most anticipated fashion events of the year.

Thousands of punters brought their fashion A-game to The Everest two weeks ago – and expectations are high for today’s Golden Eagle.

While Everest Day championed a blue hue when it comes to the fashion stakes, today’s Golden Eagle will see fashionable punters add a touch of gold to their ensemble.

“The Everest was all about making a statement, and this year didn’t disappoint,” said Sydney Everest key stylist Elliot Garnaut.

“Strong silhouettes and vibrant colours dominated, with plenty of jewel tones and metallics.

The headwear choices were spectacular, with many people opting for more structured hats that have almost architectural qualities. There was a real energy, as everyone went all out to capture that mix of glamour and high-octane style The Everest is known for.

“The Golden Eagle is where the party is at, and as I have heard: ‘West does it best’. With the theme being a ‘touch of gold’, I expect to see a lot of gold accessories or metallics throughout outfits. It’s going to be a cracking day.”

Erin Holland, Grace Hayden, Sally Bowrey and Emma Freedman will be among the thousands at Rosehill Races who will be encouraged to enter the new era by finding a Fashion Stakes mirror and posting it to their socials with #FashionStakes for a chance to win prizes.

“Spring racing in Sydney is definitely leaning toward bold colours and a mix of textures. There’s an emphasis on tailored outfits with playful twists, like unexpected cutouts or unique fabric blends. Hats and fascinators are coming through in very sculptural, modern designs. It’s been refreshing to see racegoers embrace both traditional elegance and modern edginess,” he said.

“For a hot day like today, lightweight and breathable fabrics are essential — linen and cotton blends are always a winner,” he said.

“I’d suggest opting for a wider brimmed hat instead, to add sun protection while keeping that chic look.”

Aje, Rachel Gilbert, and Rebecca Vallance are clearly the go-to brands.

“It’s always so incredible to see people wearing Rebecca Vallance during spring carnival,” Vallance said. “I love seeing how their own personal style is added to the pieces and the way they accessorise to bring the outfit together.”
