Global WWE superstars descended on Bondi Beach on Monday, hosting a surprise meet and greet with their Aussie fans for the first time since 2019.
International WWE Tag Team, and current NXT Tag Team champions, The New Day — Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E — got in a pop up wrestling ring to celebrate Binge becoming the new streaming home of the WWE Network in Australia.
The American pro wrestlers have been a fan-favourite trio since 2014, and are also ringing in former WWE champion Kingston’s 15th year on the main roster.
“We are really sappy,” Kingston, 41, told The Daily Telegraph of their relationship. “We’ve always enjoyed each other. “We’ve always fought for each other, and that extends to our personal lives. We realised very quickly we have a very unnatural bond.”
In addition to being a WWE, RAW, and SmackDown Tag Team Champion, Woods, broke the Guinness World Record for the most-subscribed-to celebrity gaming YouTube channel.
“A long time ago we realised we’re trying to make our minutes on TV count, and do as many GIF-worthy things as possible,” the 36-year-old joked.
But for viewers, Woods added the key hook is “there’s literally no off-season,” with wrestlers in the ring 52 weeks out of the year.
Following an injury in March 2022 that broke his neck, founding member Big E, 36, has been in recovery, and assisting with recruiting the next generation to the sport.
“We want to be as good as we can bell to bell,” he said, “but we want to bring a tonne of personality, that’s how legends are made.”
“Some people recall the matches and moves, but most remember the nonsense and colour.”
Hundreds of Aussie fans turned out to cheer on the trio at Bondi Surf Life Saving Club ahead of the upcoming Royal Rumble and Wrestle Mania events, which will be live-streamed.
According to Woods, people continue to flock to the sport because “it’s the last true form of Shakespearean theatre”.
