Hoping to be “one of those big names” of the sport, US tennis champion Coco Gauff insists she is just like other teenagers.

Knocked out of the competition by Sofia Kenin yesterday, the 15-year-old on Friday became the youngest woman to reach the round of 16 at the Australian Open after Martin Hingis in 1996 and Steffi Graf in 1984.

“I am the future because I am going to be playing in the next generation and I don’t plan on quitting tennis any time soon,” Gauff told Confidential.

When not smashing it on the court, Gauff says she likes to listen to music, watch TV (her favourite show at the moment is You) and go shopping.

“I am more of a hip hop person, R & B,” she said.

“My favourite rapper is between J. Cole and Jaden (Smith), I also really like Roddy Rich, his new album is really good.”

Gauff is in the equivalent of Year 10 and studies online. Her “guilty pleasures” include TikTok, Instagram and Netflix. “Those three are my worst.”

While in Melbourne competing in the Australian Open, Gauff took time out from training to go ten pin bowling.

She usually travels with her father Corey and her coaches. Her mum Candi accompanies her on some of her tournaments.

“I just do normal teenage stuff,” the athlete said. “I like travelling. I like seeing new things. I am very adventurous so I have no problem with travelling.

“Obviously I do miss my family but other than that I really like it.”

On a usual day at home in Florida, Gauff spends four to five hours a day on the court training.

“When I am at a tournament, maybe just two hours a day because you want to stay fresh for the matches.”
