Celeb hotspot Mimi’s launches Australian first, 1.75L margarita magnum cocktail valued at $1250

A swanky Sydney restaurant has launched a 1.75-litre margarita magnum cocktail, priced at $1250, as Sydney’s obsession with the drink shows no signs of slowing down ahead of World Margarita Day.

The price of beer to rise

Sydney’s obsession with the margarita shows no signs of stopping, with everything from a beer and margarita mix to a $1250 magnum popping up at venues across the city.

With Thursday, February 22, being World Margarita Day, venues have gone to new levels to celebrate the cocktail which had a massive resurgence during covid.

Celebrity hot spot Mimi’s, which gave Instagram its caviar bumps and had Kourtney Kardashian visit recently, are launching a 1.752L margarita magnum.

The mammoth Australia-first cocktail serves 10 to 12 people.

The cocktail was developed by the 2023 Bartender of the Year James Irvine (who is also the groups Creative Cocktail Lead) and comes with a choice of salts, from citrus to chilli, so guests can garnish how they see fit.

In partnership with luxe tequila brand Don Julio 1942, which retails for $250 a bottle, the magnum costs $1250 and will sit chilled over ice, tableside.

“The Margarita is the world’s most ordered cocktail … it’s the versatility of the Margarita that makes it so appealing to the masses,” said Irvine.

“Whether you’re a purist with a Classic or a Tommy’s Margarita or adventurous with iterations of spice, savoury or more contemporary styles of Margarita, you’re contributing to the Margarita’s global acclaim.”

“The ritual of the Mimi’s magnum margarita is to celebrate one of our favourite cocktails in style!”

On the other end of the spectrum, Bondi beach brewery Curly Lewis has launched a half margarita, half beer or Largerita. The El Tequileno Largerita is available on tap and combines their Curly Lewis El Gringo Cerveza with a Tommy’s Margarita (tequila, agave syrup and lime juice.) The creation came about because the drinks are the two most requested at the seaside brewery and restaurant (which is also launching a Taco Thursday menu to go with it).

“Mexican-style lagers are having a moment, and the Tommy’s Margarita has become a fan-favourite across bars across the country. Our El Tequileno Lagerita is the love child of the two and the ultimate beer for the lively Bondi crowd,” said Curly Lewis Co-Founder Oliver dos Remedios.

YES, THERE IS LIFE ON SUNDAY

Sydney’s CBD is showing a new sign of life, with some of the cities top restaurants making the move to trade seven days a week, not just the traditional five.

While many venues balance their trading hours across weekdays and one weekend, big hospitality players have made plans to open on Sundays too.

House Made Hospitality, the rising hospitality group behind ventures like Quay Quarter’s Hinchcliff House and the redevelopment of the historic Wentworth Hotel site in the CBD, have announced their popular restaurant Grana will soon be open on Sundays.

The restaurant, on the ground floor of Hinchcliff House, will launch a Pasta Club on Sundays from March 10, offering a three-course pasta feed for lunch and dinner for $79pp.

Director Scott Brown said it had always been the companies vision to trade seven days since they opened in 2021, but covid delayed that.

“We’ve been trading very strongly six days a week for quite a while and constantly have guests asking us to open on Sundays so it’s the right time,” he said.

You get the best out of the city on a Sunday as you don’t have the corporate chaos and there are less people sightseeing so there is a more relaxed vibe. Grana’s on the doorstep of the Circular Quay transport hub so you can easily arrive by ferry, train or bus plus parking is far easier on a Sunday.”

True to the venues philosophy, all pastas will be made onsite and each dish will be made specifically for the weekend customers and not feature on the menu during the week.

Fabbrica Pasta Shop, on King Street on the CBD, also started trading on Sundays from the end of last year.

General Manager Marlon Kigonya said with the restaurants small size and high demand, the decision to trade on Sundays was to give diners another option to get in.

“We are fully booked most nights and decided to open Sundays to give diners another opportunity to come in and experience the brand and food. It has also given our staff, many of whom are casuals and study during the week, more opportunities to work outside of school hours,” Kigonya said.

Since deciding to open on Sundays in late 2023, we have been super busy but the service is a bit more relaxed than it is on weekdays, with more tourists and shoppers taking their time with a glass of wine and a couple of bowls of pasta.”

While the newly transformed Jacksons on George are now offering live music on Sundays from 3pm in the Public Bar because of the increase in foot traffic on the weekend.

“Throughout summer we’ve seen trade on Sundays in the CBD increase week-on-week, with people stopping into the Public Bar for a couple of drinks after lunch or grabbing a bite to eat as they explore the city. The energy is great which is why we’ve introduced live music on Sunday arvos, to give people somewhere to enjoy great live music in the CBD and have a few drinks to finish up their weekend,” said Venue Manager Paul Burnicle.
