Cate Blanchett blew kisses to the Cannes Film Festival audience as her new film, Rumours, earned a four-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night.
The Australian actor, 54, beamed and waved at photographers and fans as she strode down the red carpet for the dark comedy in a glittering gold gown, looking reminiscent of an Oscars statuette.
The film follows the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies at the annual G7 summit after they become lost in the woods and face increasing peril while attempting to draft a group statement regarding a global crisis.
“The crowd welcomed the film’s dark humour, laughing throughout the entirety of the late-night screening,” Variety reported. “While some of the auditorium emptied out while the credits rolled, the majority of filmgoers waited patiently to pay their respects to the film’s stars.”
Rumours’ trio of directors — Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson — seemed surprised by Cannes’ relatively new tradition of handing the filmmaker(s) a microphone for post-screening remarks.
They made a speech together after the applause wrapped, thanking the audience and quoting their own film by saying “it’s better to burn out than to fade away.”
Notably absent for the premiere was Blanchett’s co-star Alicia Vikander. The 35-year-old Swedish actor is an Oscar winner best known for starring in The Danish Girl and Ex Machina.
Australian Fashion Week may be over but on Saturday, both Blanchett and Australian model Shanina Shaik shone in one of the season’s hottest trends — metallics.
The former Victoria’s Secret model shimmered in a floor-length silver gown on the red carpet for Emilia Perez, a musical drama starring Selena Gomez and Avatar star Zoe Saldana.
The Australian contingent have held their own against Hollywood royalty during the annual celebration of cinema on the French Riveria, with early reviews of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga calling George Miller’s prequel a masterpiece.
“It’s a little nerve-racking. Everyone does the best we can and then you offer it out, it’s like pushing a little kid into the world and seeing what everyone thinks about it,” Miller told The Daily Telegraph.
“When you feel you’ve done the best you can, it’s always a good feeling. We have a great cast and crew and they all gave it their best. I think it’s up there on the screen and now it’s in the hands of the audience.”
Miller, along with stars Chris Hemsworth, Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne, received a seven minute standing ovation at their Cannes screening on Thursday.
Starlet Anya Taylor-Joy saluted the Oscar-winning Australian director, who received “a special a dispensation” to host the world’s first public screening of Furiosa at Sydney’s State Theatre earlier this month.
