At 62-years-old, Heather Inwood decided it was finally time to try and fulfil a lifelong dream of becoming a model.
Turned away from the industry when she was younger because she wasn’t the right height, Inwood answered a call for senior models at SilverFox MGMT.
“There was a part of me that wasn’t satisfied and I thought, before I retire I need to at least try,” said Inwood.
Now, three years later at 65, Inwood is the star of iconic Australian brand Camilla and Marc’s latest denim campaign and when the pictures of her were released onto the brand’s social media page this week, the response was overwhelmingly.
The brand tracked almost three times the likes and positive comments on Inwood’s inclusion compared to a usual post. “Thank you for recognising women are not forever 19,” one follower wrote. “I love that your brand is normalising imagery of gorgeous and graceful women from an older age bracket,” wrote another.
“It’s been such a surprise, but, it’s given me the confidence to keep on trotting,” said Inwood from her Tweed Heads Home.
“I think it shows women just want to be accepted at any age. We don’t want to be stereotyped.”
Camilla and Marc, Camilla Freedman-Topper said the positive response to Inwood’s casting was both encouraging and a confirmation the brand was on the right path.
“It’s really important as a label that we are allowing women to be women, by representing an ageless and timeless projection of real beauty,” she said. “It’s important to honour women at every stage of life.”
The campaign images show Inwood, who “doesn’t believe in plastic surgery”, in very little makeup.
She adds that while she’s happy for her age to be seen in her face, she doesn’t want to wear it in her clothes.
“As I got older I started to lose myself, thinking how do I dress? I don’t want to wear twin sets and pleated dresses. But it shows that classic style is timeless. I was wearing double denim growing up.”
The executive director of SilverFox MGMT, Brigitte Warne, believes Inwood’s inclusion in the Camilla and Marc is a testament to how far their age positive mission has come.
“ To be completely honest with you, when first launched we felt like we were fighting a bit of a losing battle. No one was willing to take the chance on using more mature talent, but we stuck with it,” she said. “This will be our biggest year yet, despite all the challenges of Covid, and we have no plans on slowing down!”
