MUMS to be Nadia Bartel and Elise Swallow glowed on the Brownlow red carpet as they near the closing stages of their pregnancy.
Swallow, 36 weeks pregnant, said it had been an unusual preparation.
“It’s been a very different journey this year,” said the wife of North Melbourne captain Andrew Swallow, wearing a Helen Manuell gown.
“I’m due October 27 but who knows.” Andrew admitted there were a few tense moments before last weekend’s preliminary final against West Coast.
“Two nights before the game she said I’m feeling weird,” he said. “I wasn’t sure what was going on.”
Bartel, wife of Geelong star Jimmy Bartel, is 32 weeks pregnant. She said she was pleased with her Paolo Sebastian gown which came together at the last minute.
Nervous for a different reason was Geelong captain Joel Selwood who was accompanied by girlfriend Brit Davis, making her Brownlow debut.
“I feel pretty special tonight,” he said. “We’re off to Africa soon on Safari and then an island stop off at Seychelles.
“Gone are the footy trips — I spend too much time with the boys anyway.”
Hundreds of footballers donned the black tie for football’s night of nights.
Richmond’s Dustin Martin took ex teammate Aaron Edwards, Jack Riewoldt took teammate Troy Chaplin while the Bulldogs’ Luke Dahlhaus was accompanied by his mum Lori.
Collingwood star and Brownlow medallist Dane Swan returned to the Brownlow after skipping it last year.
Last to arrive was Richmond captain Trent Cotchin and his wife Brooke.
