Boy George hangs up on 4BC’s Neil Breen in awkward interview

If you enjoy squirming in your seat then have a listen to this positively cringeworthy interview between former Channel 9 reporter Neil Breen and The Voice coach Boy George.

Boy George hangs up on Brisbane radio host (4BC)

Boy George has hung up on Brisbane radio host Neil Breen after he found their conversation “insulting.”

The Voice coach took offence to the 4BC breakfast host’s introduction to their interview, where Breen only mentioned two of The Culture Club singer’s songs - Do You Really Want To Hurt Me and Karma Chameleon - and didn’t talk to any of his works since.

Breen started off the interview saying, “I’m nervous,” before Boy George quipped, “especially after that terrible comment about my music. There was about 10 records you missed that were huge massive hits …. I mean, please”.

It didn’t get easier from there with Breen then explaining the singer was “big in his house”.

“Please don’t talk about me like I live in past context … it’s really insulting,” said Boy George.

Breen went on to explain he didn’t mean to “insult him” but was rather, “reintroducing you to the audience who remember you from those great days but also remember you now.”

That was the final straw for Boy George, who lashed out at Breen, saying: “Introduce me to someone who is on national TV in Australia for the past four years. You don’t have to reintroduce me … I’m on TV everybody knows who I am.”

Breen tried to continue on with the awkward interview before eventually realising Boy George, who appears on the Channel 9 show and is the same network that owns Breen’s radio station, had hung up on him.

“I didn’t want to insult Boy George, he hung up on me,” he told his listeners. “I thought we were all in the Channel 9 tent. Sometimes pop stars, they are funny … if you play their old song, they disown it.”

Breen then went on to ask his audience to call in if they’d seen a more “petulant display.”

Boy George is currently in the UK and can’t get back to Australia to continue filming the singing contest because of COVID-19 restrictions.
