Bondi Vet Dr Kate Adams on dating: ‘Men don’t find successful women appealing’

Bondi Vet Dr Kate Adams runs a thriving practice and TV show but after years of navigating the Sydney dating scene, the 38-year-old has found men don’t find successful women appealing.

When TV vet Kate Adams bought her own business and established it as a thriving practice, she figured her success would be – at least a little – a point of interest for the opposite sex.

However, a few years of navigating the Sydney dating scene has left the 38-year-old wondering why the opposite is true – many men are not attracted to a successful woman.

“I have found that success generally isn’t seen as appealing for guys,” said the Bondi Vet star who relocated to Sydney from Melbourne several years ago.

“Generally they don’t love women who are successful, which I find interesting.

“Particularly when the opposite tends to be true when women view a potential partner.

“I’m not sure that men find it intimidating maybe? But I don’t feel like I am an intimidating person. But it’s interesting.”

And sometimes when Adams finds herself on a date in a restaurant or bar, she says they see her as being in a position to pick up the tab.

“I have been stuck with the cheque on more than one occasion because I think they think I have all this money,” she laughed.

“Not even splitting the bill but the full cheque.

“I have honestly been out for dinner at a restaurant with guys – more than one occasion – and I will be left to pay the bill. It’s quite extraordinary.

“I am at the point now where if a guy paid for my meal I would be shocked.”

Then there is that other recurring annoyance, the question of her “boss” Chris Brown, who departed the Bondi Vet series back in 2016. Despite the fact Adams has helmed the top-rating show for three years, she is still often faced with questions about whether or not Brown controls her business.

“Which I find quite offensive because I am actually the business owner,” she said.

“But I guess that comes down to the fact that there aren’t as many female business owners as there are men. Not a lot of young women are owning large businesses anyway.

“I would certainly like to live in a world where it’s not immediately assumed that I work for a guy.”

But in the search for love, as in business, Adams is undeterred.

She is a huge proponent of dating apps – so much so that she has recently partnered up with the app scene newcomer Hinge for a new feature that allows singles to take their pets on dates as a kind of ultimate icebreaker.

Hinge and Uber have partnered up to give people who match through a pet-related prompt a huge discount on Uber Pet Ride so long as they bring their beloved best buddy along for a ‘vibe check’.

It was a decision based on years of witnessing what differing views on animals can do to a relationship.

“It’s a deal-breaker, for me anyway,” she said.

“I have a 14-year-old golden retriever, Ben, who I love so much and if someone doesn’t click with him, then I’m out.”
