A 66-year-old social media star who loathes what social media has become is to be one of the standout contestants on the new season of Big Brother Australia.
“Social media is appalling because it is not real,” Sarah Jane Adams told Confidential. “The reason I went in to the (Big Brother) house is because I want people to know who I really am. If they all hate me, that is fine because it is who I am. Social media if it is used correctly is a fantastic thing but unfortunately we are so far down this path, it is a terrible thing.”
Adams is an antique jewellery dealer and model, who is in demand with some of Australia’s top fashion brands because of her authenticity and unique style.
She has more than 200,000 Instagram followers alone and does not like to be referred to as an influencer.
Adams does not watch television and ironically, only recently bought a small TV — the first she has owned in more than 25 years – to watch the reality show when it premieres on Monday night.
She is one of 20 housemates set to compete for the series title and $250,000 cash prize money.
“I didn’t even know what MAFS is,” she said, having learnt of reality show Married At First Sight through fellow Big Brother housemate Mary Kalifatidis, mother of MAFS influencer Martha.
Big Brother, she explained, is a social experiment.
“I am completely bemused that all of this is happening because I am just a regular little weirdo,” she laughed. “I obviously want to represent older people, and women, people who are terrified of getting old. It is nothing to be terrified of if you have the right attitude.”
Adams, who goes by the nickname SJ, describes herself as a hustler.
“I am a hustler because all of my life I have only ever been self employed,” Adams, who moved to Australia from the UK in the 1980s and is mum to adult twin daughters, explained. “I have bought and sold stuff and that has been a hustle.”
On Monday, the full Big Brother cast was revealed.
Reinvigorated with a new format last year, the new series will launch next week with the motley crue of 20 contestants unveiled.
Host Sonia Kruger said the “housemates are like no other group I’ve ever seen”.
“They come from completely different backgrounds, occupations and skill sets,” she said. “From a casting perspective it’s a fantastic mix of personalities and players.”
Deejay and social media star Flex Mami (Lillian Ahenkan) is in the mix, as is fashionista Sarah Jane Adams and AFLW recruit Jess Trend and basketball player Marley Biyendolo.
There’s a shock connection to rival reality show Married At First Sight too with Mary Kalifatitis in the cast. Kalifatidis is the mother of former MAFS contestant, Martha.
“It is time for me to shine and do something for Mary, and see what I was capable ofout of my comfort zone,” Kalifatidis said. “I’ve always been in a comfort zone and now I’m about to fall out of a plane with no parachute and I don’t know where I will land. My feelings are I might fall on my face or I might fall on my feet. Yes, I’m 55, but there is so much to learn.”
Of the cast, Kruger added: “To get to the end of the game, housemates need the ability to read a room quickly and adapt. They have to be able to keep secrets and yet appear to be open and honest. They need to play all sides and somehow remain Switzerland. In short, they need to have all the attributes of a politician.”
