Benji’s wife Zoe Marshall‘s dark pivot into the podcast world

The wife of NRL player Benji Marshall hopes to show she is more than just an influencer with her new eyebrow raising project tackling sex, bullying and drugs.

Zoe Marshall has drawn a metaphorical line in the sand with her latest foray into the public eye.

Inspired by British journalist Louis Theroux, the radio host wife of rugby league great Benji Marshall this week launches a gritty podcast, The Deep.

The podcast delves into the lives of Australians who have chosen to walk a path less travelled, often facing adversity, ranging from subjects like curing terminal cancer, drug addiction, sexual abuse, trolling and sexuality.

“I feel like there is no going back,” Marshall told Confidential. “This is the line in the sand for me, for my career, for who I am as a person. I have to stand by this work that I am putting out there and it is terrifying.

Marshall, 36, thinks the industry might find her new project “unexpected” as it is a drastic change from the commercial radio and TV work she has done in the past.

“I think that I am perceived to be something that I am not and that is my fault,” she said. “I think that maybe I have not allowed this vulnerable part of me to come out because it is terrifying with work that you truly believe in to be scrutinised or taken the wrong way. You have no control over the way someone interprets your work.”

Other issues Marshall is keen to explore is the anti-vaccination movement, mental illness, Suicide and racism.

She added: “That is what I mean by the line in the sand, how do I go back to talking about frivolous things when you go here? These can be complicated issues but every story has a reason behind it. I’ve chosen to vaccinate my son but I want to hear why someone is passionate about being anti-vax, what is that reason whether we agree with it or not.”

Sporting culture, specifically relating to footballers, is something Marshall would also like to look at.

“I am married to the most private human in the world and I have my own views about footballers behaviour especially in relation to domestic violence,” she said. “I am a survivor and I cover DV in one of the episodes but I also have to respect that this is his world and I almost feel like I need some sort of permission to go there. It is somewhere I definitely want to go.”
