Chart-topping muso Illy has given modelling a crack.
The celebrated rapper fronts the new campaign for Superdry’s Reimagined Classics leather and denim range, a move that saw the performer step out of his comfort zone to embrace his inner ‘blue steel’.
“There was no sort of checking myself out in the mirror prior to the shoot but I did make sure that I was photo ready because after a couple of years of not being in front of the camera too often, I just wanted to make sure I was on point,” Illy told Confidential.
So what exactly is photo ready for Illy? Shaving? A haircut perhaps?
“Just being generally in shape,” he said.
“It is a job and I take any job I get seriously so I want to look the part and be able to do the job to the best of my abilities.”
Illy, whose real name is Alasdair David George Murray, is one of Australia’s top music artists with multiple ARIA Awards to his name. His biggest hits include Papercuts and Catch 22.
While of course more comfortable on stage performing than modelling, he enjoyed the process as his girlfriend works in fashion.
“She has spent the past couple of years working on me as her pet project,” he laughed.
“When I am performing, my main thing is always the function above the fashion but if I can do both, why not?
“As far as away from the stage, of course I like to look good and I like to put some thought into it.”
He added that it is nice to put in a bit of effort.
“I am no stranger to a hoodie and I am definitely no stranger to trackpants but I am covered in that regard with Superdry but also like levelling up and looking a bit smarter so all occasions are covered.”
As for new music, Illy recently signed a new deal with Warner Music Australia and will be putting out a new album this year.
“It is full steam on to new music and new album,” he said.
“With everything starting to come back into line and things returning to somewhat normal, I can start touring and getting back to life as we knew it in the before times.
“I want to get back on to it and be able to hit the road and do my job again.”
