Australian Idol legends reunite for iconic duet

A male and male duet is a rare thing.

In fact Guy Sebastian can’t remember the last time one was released, most certainly not in recent times and definitely not locally.

Sebastian has teamed up with fellow Aussie singer Sam Fischer.

“I just love that it is a male male duet,” Sebastian said. “I don’t think that there’s heaps of them, especially in Australia, there’s not heaps.”

The track is titled Antidote and was written about the pair’s love of music but also how it has “gotten us through”.

“For me it actually has a couple of different meanings and it changes all of the time, which I think is a reflection of how people will digest this song. I don’t think it is going to be one thing for each individual.”

Antidote has been a long time in the works with Sebastian carefully crafting the song for more than nine months. It is deeply personal to him.

“I am going to say I have never poured more time and effort into a song in my life than this one,” he explained. “I think it is very special and nothing will be able to take that away from me. I think the right people will find this – it is not a big pop ear candy song, to me it is beautiful, I can’t listen to the bridge without choking up.”

Fischer has been based in the US for several years and is best known for his ARIA Award nominated track, This City.

“I have always wanted to work with Sam, he is such a beast,” Sebastian said.

“He is like one of my best mates now, we have become really close.

“I just feel like this is probably my most … Choir was really special but it was a different sort of special.

“This is like my whole life, there are bits of my faith, bits of just my life in general, all is in this song, even the ability to structure and create complex melodies and earworms over the most simple chordal structure. I feel like I threw everything I’ve got into this song, lyrically, melodically, production-wise, I did this production for nine months.”
