And just like that, they’re back. Yes, 20 years after they changed the television landscape with their frank chats about sex and relationships, the Sex and the City women have returned.

HBO Max’s 10-episode series, titled And Just Like That, which will begin airing on Binge in Australia tonight, will follow three of the four main characters from the original show – Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis – as they “navigate the reality of life and friendship in their 50s”.

(After a very public falling out with star Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall will not be returning as Samantha.)

Throughout its six-season run, Sex and the City was beloved by many 20 and 30-something women all over the world, who bonded over having to navigate careers, families and love-lives.

So when Parker, Nixon and Davis all posted a teaser to Instagram for the show’s “new chapter” back in January, fans went crazy.

“I couldn’t help but wonder … where are they now? X, SJ” Parker captioned the post.

It was soon announced that original cast members Chris Noth, Mario Cantone, Willie Garson, John Corbett, David Eigenberg and Evan Handler were reprising their roles in the revival. Sara Ramírez, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker and Karen Pittman were added as new characters.

During New York’s 2021 summer, spotting the cast members as they shot the new series became a daily obsession for fans, tourists and tabloids. And the reboot’s timing was impeccable. With New York emerging from a Covid abyss in 2021, seeing Parker, Nixon and Davis back on Manhattan’s streets seemed to buoy the city in a similar way to what the show did post-September 11.

When the cast shot a brunch scene at famed Upper East Side eatery East Pole crowds formed around the restaurant as if the actors were rock stars.

“The excitement from the fans was palpable,” East Pole owner Anthony Martignetti told The New York Post. “When [the cast] got out of the town cars, people were screaming the characters’ names. They were really freaking out for Stanford [Willie Garson].”

Sadly, fan favourite Garson, who played Carrie’s BFF Stanford, died from pancreatic cancer in September.

In the lead up to tonight’s premiere, Sarah Jessica Parker took to Instagram to thank the show’s fans of “many years”.

“Thank you for giving us the chance to be together again and for inspiring this next chapter of SATC,” she said.

And Cynthia Nixon also took to Instagram earlier this week to mark the end of shooting the series.

“And Just Like That … it’s a wrap!” began the actress. ‘For the very late final night of shooting had to send off this A+ cast and crew in style and with @NYCLoveCoffee in hand,” she wrote.

“I also want to give it up for the badass team that helped me become Miranda every day for AJLT (And Just Like That) & some ever since SATC! Zoom in to our matching aviator wear to see the words that inspired the Miranda Unit for this next chapter — the countdown to Thursday’s premiere is on!”

Across Manhattan, on billboards and on the side of buses, the faces of Parker, Nixon and Davis beam out at New Yorkers. Hoards of tourists have again descended on Perry St in the West Village (where the exterior of Carrie’s apartment is shot) and launch parties across the city will be awash with Cosmopolitan cocktails on Thursday night just like it’s the turn of the millennium again. And after everything this city – and the world – has been through in the past couple of years, what’s wrong with drinking in a bit of nostalgia?

And Just Like That premiers on Binge from 7pm AEDT Thursday, December 9.
