Hollywood actor Ruby Rose has launched a blistering attack against Batwoman more than one year after she abruptly left the show, with explosive claims of bullying, blackmail and other inappropriate behaviour on set.
The 35-year-old, who played the lead role of Kate Kane/Batwoman for one season on the TV series, slammed production companies Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions along with broadcaster The CW network in a scathing Instagram post.
“Enough is enough. I’m going to tell the whole world what really happened on that set,” she began.
“I will come for you so what happened to me never happens to another person again. And so I can finally take back my life and the truth. Shame on you.”
Rose alleged that after she had emergency surgery for an injury which she sustained on set in 2019, she was asked to return to work early by the former head of Warner Bros. TV Peter Roth, “or the show would effectively not be able to continue”.
At the time, Rose was rushed to hospital after the stunt scene caused two herniated discs in her neck.
The Los Angeles-based actor also accused the show of having unsafe work conditions which allegedly caused one crew member to sustain third degree burns “over his whole body”.
When approached for comment, a spokesman for Warner Bros. TV Group told Confidential, “Despite the revisionist history that Ruby Rose is now sharing online aimed at the producers, the cast and crew, the network, and the Studio, the truth is that Warner Bros. Television had decided not to exercise its option to engage Ruby for season two of Batwoman based on multiple complaints about workplace behaviour that were extensively reviewed and handled privately out of respect for all concerned.”
Confidential has also contacted Berlanti Productions and The CW network for comment.
In May last year, Rose shocked fans when she announced her departure from the show after it had already been renewed for a second season.
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” she said in a statement.
“This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”
She later elaborated on her decision in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“I had my surgery and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn’t the best idea.
“Most people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that. But as far as being a lead of a show or a film, regardless if it’s action or if it’s emotional, in whichever ways it’s taxing,” she said.
Rose, who is openly gay, previously described the role as a “childhood dream”.
It marked the first ever gay or lesbian lead in a DC or Marvel superhero series.
The former Orange is the New Black star was later replaced by American actor Javicia Leslie.
