When Australia’s pop princess Kylie Minogue met Coldplay legend Chris Martin, one of them was completely starstruck.
“That first meeting was otherworldly,” Martin confessed in an essay he penned in tribute to his old friend in the Time 100 Most Influential People of 2024 edition.
And there was one big reason for the ‘Yellow’ crooner’s fanboying – Neighbours.
Like many Brits, Martin was completely hooked on the Australian soap opera in which Kylie starred as girl next door Charlene Robinson.
“Kylie Minogue was one of the first people I ever met from TV. She was a pop star, and I had watched her in Neighbours every day for a decade,” Martin wrote.
“So when she came to an early Coldplay show, I’d already been her fan for nearly 15 years.”
So cemented a bond that would stand the test of time.
Fans of the duo will know they have performed together on several occasions including during Coldplay’s 2014 Australian tour.

However it was their appearance together at Britain’s iconic Glastonbury festival in 2019 when Kylie, the ticketed performer, brought out Martin as a surprise guest which really sent fans of both artists into overdrive – especially given the touching backstory.
Kylie was forced to pull out of a planned performance at Glastonbury back in 2005 as she was battling breast cancer.
Martin was among the artists who took to the stage to cover her spot, performing covers of her greatest hits.
Kylie never forgot the gesture and 14 years later it came full circle when Martin joined her in a duet of one of her greatest hits Can’t get You Out of My Head.

Martin continued the tribute in Time by going on to describe his dear friend as an artist “10 years ahead of everyone else” whose music stood the test of time.
“After all this time, Kylie’s star has never dimmed,” he wrote.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to know her, and she is deserving of every good thing that happens to her.”
Speaking at the gala for the launch of the Time edition, Kylie revealed to Us Weekly the affection was mutual.
“I was a Coldplay fan from, I mean Millennium,” she gushed.
“I may have worn out the CD. There’s a mutual respect and admiration and friendship and love there.”
Kylie is currently in Las Vegas where she has been performing at the Venetian’s famed nightclub Voltaire all week.
