Rare Steve Irwin video shows late icon in disguise at Australia Zoo

Robert Irwin previously revealed his dad used to get around Australia Zoo in a “ridiculous” disguise, and now, never-before-seen footage has been released.

Rare video shows Steve Irwin in 'ridiculous' disguise

Robert Irwin previously revealed his late father Steve Irwin regularly donned a “ridiculous” disguise in a bid to go incognito at Australia Zoo.

The son of the legendary ‘Crocodile Hunter’ told Stellar magazine in his 2022 cover story his dad famously dressed as an alter ego known as ‘Glenn Glamour’ to get jobs done around the sprawling Queensland zoo without being noticed.

Now, one of this year’s I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! cast members has allowed the release of a rare video she shot while visiting the Irwin family at their zoo in the early ‘2000s.

Australian actress Sigrid Thornton, who is currently in camp in South Africa for the Channel 10 reality series, took the footage during a personalised tour from Steve and Terri while her husband Tom Burstall was working on the 2002 movie The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course.

In the footage, we see Steve carrying a then-infant Bindi while wearing fake teeth, speed dealer-style sunglasses and a hat.

“It just changes the whole face shape,” a woman can be heard saying in the background, with Steve turning to the camera cheerily delivering a classic “G’day”.

Thornton, 65, had the video shown to an overjoyed Terri and Robert before she went into camp.

Robert, who is now 21 and a co-host on I’m A Celeb alongside Julia Morris, previously lifted the lid on ‘Glenn Glamour’ during his wide-ranging interview with Stellar.

“He would put in false teeth, a wig, this ridiculous multi-coloured trench coat, the weirdest pants and really sketchy sneakers,” Robert said at the time.

“And that’s how he would get around the zoo and no-one would notice him because he was just wearing the most ridiculous thing.”

Robert, meanwhile, is firmly following in his father’s footsteps, and was nominated for the coveted Gold Logie last year after just one season at the helm of the prime time TV series.

He told news.com.au from South Africa during his debut season the gig was a “dream come true”, largely, because it aligned with his beloved dad’s conservation legacy.

“I have this path, this true north and this real mission and purpose behind what I do. And there’s so many different ways to carry on a legacy and to create your own,” he said at the time.

“To be able to find ‘Robert’s’ way of doing that, that’s really fun. And I’ve found so many ways throughout my life, behind the camera, in front of the camera, but this is just this incredible new chapter, trying something that I’ve never done before.

“And that wildlife aspect is here … That’s where the fun really comes in life, sticking to your authentic goals and what really gives you that fire in your belly and that passion.

“This is also a great new audience to reach a conservation message in a very subtle way.”

I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! continues tonight at 7.30pm on 10 and 10 Play
