Stars have hit the red carpet for the Australian premiere of House of the Dragon, the globally-anticipated prequel series to Game of Thrones.
One of Australia’s own acting exports, Packed to the Rafters and Love Child actor Ryan Corr, made a special appearance at Hoyts Entertainment Quarter in Sydney on Tuesday night, where he gave a rare insight into his role in the mega show.
Corr, 33, told news.com.au his experience filming the series, which cost an eye-watering $300 million to make, was “incredibly exciting”.
“It was an arduous audition process, at the back end of Covid lockdown, and so I was low key losing my mind and then along comes the biggest audition and the biggest show of my life and career so far,” Corr said.
“Eventually I had Ryan (Condal) and Miguel (Sapochnik) call and say they wanted me to be apart of it. That’s a bit of a golden ticket. Every now and then in this industry you have moments where you’re like [fist pump].”
Corr plays Ser Harwin Strong in the show, but he’s yet to appear in any preview clips. In fact, there’s very little known about his role, but the actor gave some insight into what viewers can expect from him.
“He’s a hunter. A great fighter. Sort of, common born and slowly as the series progresses he finds himself in … other places,” Corr said.
“There was huge amounts of stunt training. When I first got there, there was some boxing mitts, and [they said] ‘Here’s a video of what you’ll be doing. You’ll throw that guy over the table.’ They’ve got all wires and things to make you look sensational like a superhero. It’s a huge amount of work. But I just feel so lucky.”
VIP guests were treated to an advanced screening of the first episode, which airs express from the US on Binge and Foxtel August 22.
Elsewhere, Anthony Callea, Tim Campbell, Erin Holland, Rodger Corser and Matty Johns were among a host of local big names to walk the red carpet:
House of the Dragon is set around 200 years before the events of GoT, focusing on the rise and fall of the Targaryen family.
It’s based on a section of Martin’s A Song Of Ice and Fire companion book, Fire & Blood, during a civil war dubbed the ‘Dance of the Dragons’.
This particular era is when the Targaryen dynasty reigns supreme, with King Viserys serving as the peaceful ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.
But chaos ensues with a host of potential heirs who want to be his successor, including Viserys’ daughter Rhaenyra Tagaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and his brother Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).
And then there’s his second-wife Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) who, judging by the trailer, has desires to block Rhaenyra’s claim and birth a rightful male heir.
To really heat things up, in a stark contrast to GoT, there’s 17 dragons in the fray.
