GOLDEN girl Cate Blanchett took home the award for the Best Actress at the Oscars.
The Aussie actress delivered an emotion-filled acceptance speech where she urged producers to make more films with women as the lead. She also thanked controversial director Woody Allen “for casting me” and gave a shout-out to her beloved Sydney Theatre Company.
But it’s lucky that Blanchett was even around to accept her award, telling E! that she almost missed her big moment because she was having a drink with another Hollywood heavyweight.
“I was with Julia Roberts at the bar for rather too long and I just got back to my seat in time,” Blanchett said.
Other big winners on the night were Matthew McConaughey for his role in Dallas Buyer’s Club while the Brad Pitt-produced film 12 Years A Slave won the Oscar for Best Picture.
Host Ellen DeGeneres dished out the jokes, transforming the night into one of the most enjoyable awards ceremonies in recent memory.

AS IT HAPPENED:
• Brad Pitt and Steve McQueen, along with the cast of 12 Years A Slave accept the award for Best Picture.
• Cate Blanchett accepts her Best Actress award and jokingly says: “To Julia, hashtag suck it!” At least Julia Roberts seemed to know what she was talking about.
In a press conference afterwards, Cate spoke about the bizarre comment, saying: “It happened in the bar with Ms. Roberts. And that’s all I’m prepared to say.” We’re so intrigued.
• Matthew McConaughey‘s emotional acceptance speech included a shout-out to his deceased father, saying: “To my father, who I know is up there right now ... to you, Dad, you taught me what it means to be a man.”
• Ashton Kutcher, who we assume was watching the awards show from home, took to Twitter to poke a little fun at the Best Actor winner.
