Exclusive: Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey is getting behind an Aussie travel start-up’s plans for a chain of eco tourism cabins.

The True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club star recently met with twin brothers, Cam and Chris Grant, to lend his time as creative director of the off-the-grid tiny house – as part of a Wild Turkey bourbon promotion, rewarding projects which protect the environment.

The alcohol ambassador will fly to Sydney to launch the brand’s ‘With Thanks’ campaign later this month, and unveil ‘The Reserve’ cabin he designed, which will then be placed in the NSW bush and open for public bookings from early December.

Ahead of the tour, McConaughey raved to News Corp Australia about Australia’s natural assets, which he got to experience as a young backpacker; before returning here many times for movies and premieres.

“Australia has always had a special place in my heart,” he said.

“I lived there for a year out of high school and have worked there many times making movies.

“An original Australian initiation is its rugged beauty,” he said, adding “Mother nature demands you engage with her.

“Whether it’s the outback, the Barrier Reef, or the farms on the Central Coast, I’ve enjoyed the natural beauties of Australia for years. And now I’m coming back to meet and celebrate the unwavering conviction of Aussies who work tirelessly to preserve and protect the beautiful wilderness and wildlife that is their own.”

The Grant brothers met McConaughey while he was filming the brand’s Talk Turkey online series, with $1 from the actor’s limited batch signature brand of bourbon, Longbranch sold this month and next set to go to the Unyoked’s charity partner, the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife.

Nicole Stanners, marketing director of Wild Turkey’s parent brand, Campari Australia and New Zealand, said: “We’re delighted that Matthew will be coming to Australia to shine a light on the preservation of the Australian wilderness and take a moment to thank those who share our spirit of bold conviction. It’s important we do our bit to protect the wilderness because being closer to nature is a good way to connect with yourself and others.”
