IT'S no longer ratings season, but Sunrise is determined to keep up the breakfast battle against Nine's Today with Mel Doyle and David Koch glued to the couch in the lead-up to the new year.

They hope to capitalise on the absence of Today co-host Karl Stefanovich, who is taking a six-week holiday, leaving Lisa Wilkinson to share anchor duties with Georgie Gardner and Richard Wilkins.

Doyle and Koch will take turns hosting, along with Natalie Barr, Edwina Bartholomew and Mark Beretta. The Morning Show's Larry Emdur will also guest host and Weekend's Samantha Armytage will take the helm in the new year.

Sunrise won the ratings year nationally and leads Today by an average of 368,000 viewers.

Although Koch is working New Year's Day he doesn't mind: "I have adult kids so I don't like having holidays through the school holidays. I've done that, been there and paid the expense."

The news line-ups for the networks will also be hit by seasonal changes.

Kylie Gillies will host Today Tonight, and with Chris Bath on holiday until January, Mark Ferguson will be presenting the 6pm weekday news and Chris Reason the weekend news.

Peter Overton, Georgie Gardner, Cameron Williams, Deb Knight, Wendy Kingston, Amelia Adams and Sarah Harris will be working across the news bulletins for Nine, and Cameron Williams will fill in for Tracy Grimshaw on A Current Affair until 14 January.

Over on Ten, Lachlan Kennedy, Ron Wilson, and Matt Doran will be stepping in for news anchors Sandra Sully and Hamish McDonald.
