Why Jared Leto is finally bringing his band back to Australia

Jared Leto wins tour announcement of the year. The Spider-Man of rock has launched the Seasons world tour of his band Thirty Seconds To Mars Speaker daredevil-style, by climbing the Empire State Building.

The actor rocker is an experienced rock climber who has also been snapped randomly scaling city buildings to kill time while “waiting for an Uber”.

So why not announce your global tour, which includes shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane next year, hanging from a tall iconic New York building? He may actually have to go to Mars to trump that stunt.

“I was more excited than nervous to tell you the truth,” Leto told the Today show in the US after he climbed a portion of the famous building, making him the first person ever to legally climb the landmark.

“But I have to be honest, it was very, very hard. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. Just the endurance that it took, the stamina that it took, and it was very sharp.”

When we chatted ahead of the band’s sixth album It’s the End of the World but It’s a Beautiful Day in September, Leto said climbing is “normal” to him.

“I’m standing there waiting for an Uber and I’m like, ‘Oh, it looks climbable,’ he said.

“It’s a pretty natural thing to do … we’re not too far from swinging around in branches.”

Thirty Seconds to Mars will play Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on September 12 next year, followed by Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on September 14 and The Riverstage in Brisbane on September 17.

Leto hinted the band would include Australia on their tour itinerary for the first time since 2014.

“We absolutely love to come down there. We always love it as a special place,” he said.

He has been kicking off some of the band’s comeback gigs at American festivals in recent months with a grand entrance, plunging from the roof of the stage.

“Your body will get you’re nervous, whether you want it or not … but there are a lot of people out there and you can’t freeze up, you have to give your body a little encouragement,” he said about the epic stage dives.

“But it’s quite intense, I have to say. I do a lot of rock climbing but the way that (dive) was set-up, it was a real free fall and it wasn’t just a cheap trick, it was a real thrill for me and fun to do something ridiculous.”
