A little known Aussie electric duo will represent Australia at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
On Wednesday morning, SBS and production partner Blink TV announced the news that powerful music duo Electric Fields will be our entrant at this year’s competition held in Malmö, Sweden, in May.
The South Australian duo consists of singer Zaachariaha Fielding and keyboardist Michael Ross, who today released the song they will belt out at the singing competition: One Milkali (One Blood), which incorporates Yankunytjatjara – an Aboriginal language of the Anangu peoples.
“We are buzzed with euphoria at our chance to share this music with the world,” they said in a statement.
“Our music comes from the deepest place in both of us and Eurovision is the most exciting opportunity to bring together our cultures and share the joy of our global connection.”
SBS describes the duo’s unique style as “merging traditional living culture with music that ranges from soulful pop to epic-scale electronica”.
“Since hearing their brilliant song 2000 And Whatever, we have always had our eye on Electric Fields for Eurovision,” says Paul Carke, director of Blink TV and Australia’s Creative Director for Malmö.
“They came close to winning E-AD (Eurovision – Australia Decides) back then, but they are far stronger a few years down the track. Electric Fields will bring something never seen before on the Eurovision stage. They will be deadly in Malmö!”
Fans of Eurovision may recall the duo from E-AD back in 2019, where they placed runner-up next to Kate Miller-Heidke, who went to represent Australia at the contest that year with her track Zero Gravity.
Since Australia joined the much-loved singing competition, local artists such as Dami Im, Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian.
Last year, West Australian rock band Voyager repped Australia with an energetic performance of their song Promise. And for their efforts, the rockers were rewarded with a very respectable top 10 position, placing 9th – the third time we’ve done so.
