Yes campaign always knew Voice was going to be a ‘contested space’

Australia’s most popular singers are banking on music’s power to inspire social change as they line up to perform at the Walk For Yes events this weekend.

Missy Higgins, Dan Sultan, Peter Garrett, Bernard Fanning, Paul Kelly, Busby Marou and John Butler are among the artists who will perform at the rallies around the country.

Higgins said the singers are committed to making a beautiful noise in support of the Voice to Parliament.

“To me, this is a super simple question: Indigenous people are just asking to be recognised in our constitution and to be consulted about changes that affect them. Consultation leads to better results in areas like health and education and that’s good for all Australians,” she posted on social media.

“It’s really that simple. Everything else is just noise. This is not a huge ask, it’s a very modest request that’s supported by more than 80 per cent of Indigenous people.

“The Voice to Parliament is our chance, as a Nation, to finally listen. Imagine waking up on the day that the referendum results come back, and the overwhelming vote was YES! That’s an Australia I want to wake up to.”

The music industry has spent several months working in the background to support the campaign.

Many artists and their teams were initially cautious about publicly lending their voice in the early stages of the Yes campaign as it was feared voters may be turned off by “preachy” celebrities.

But in the final month of the referendum campaign, the music industry is throwing its collective weight behind the Music For The Voice initiative in support of the Yes vote.

They are also helping raise funds to back the Yes campaign via Music For The Voice T-shirts for $59.95.

Paul Kelly will return to his Adelaide hometown to perform at Victoria Square after the Walk for Yes on Saturday alongside Emma Donovan and MARLON.

At the other events on Sunday, Higgins and Sultan will play at Victoria Park in Sydney.

Former Midnight Oil frontman Garrett will be joined by rock legends Spiderbait and indie pop star Mia Wray at the Treasury Gardens in Melbourne.

Fanning is joined by Busby Marou and Toni Janke at Brisbane’s Riverstage on Sunday afternoon while Butler and Phil Walleystack will sing for the walkers in Perth.

“We are not a political band and this is not a political stance. It is the right stance,” Jeremy Marou and Tom Busby said about performing at the Walk For Yes gig.

“We hope more than anything that our music and values might help convince those undecided to make the right decision and vote Yes.”
