Taylor Swift has sparked angry backlash with enraged pop music fans labelling the star “pathetic” and “money hungry” over her latest move.
Thousands of tweets and memes have flooded Twitter and Reddit that target Swift, who has enraged fans of British pop singer Charli XCX.
The drama first began after social media speculated that Charli’s song “Sympathy is a Knife” is a dig at Swift.
In verse two of the song, Charli sings: “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s shows/Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up quick”.
For those not in the know, Charli is currently dating George Daniel from the 1975, you know, otherwise known as Matty Healy’s (Swift’s ex-boyfriend) bandmate.
With Charli’s acclaimed album rising in the charts, earlier this week it was announced by Official Charts that the record was on-track to land at number one.
The day after the news was announced, Swift announced that she was releasing a new version of her own album, The Tortured Poets Department, with bonus tracks and first draft phone memos for UK fans.
As a result, Charli ended up landing at the number two spot on the Official UK Charts, with Swift swooping in at the very last minute to block her.
Fans of Charli have slammed Swift, accusing her of deliberately blocking Charli’s album Brat from climbing the charts. Social media has suggested it’s because Swift is angry at Charli over the song that’s rumoured to be about her, while others have claimed it’s just because even the mere association with Healy is enough to get Swift riled up and vengeful.
“Taylor Swift is psycho, she’s the cancer of the music industry, seriously, never seen such a fame-hungry and stats-obsessed “artist” in my life,” ranted one angry fan on Twitter.
“Swift is just beyond greedy, this is pathetic,” complained another.
“Wait, did Swift actually release a new version of her album just to topple Charli XCX off a number 1 album spot? I thought people were exaggerating, but that’s actually what’s happened? And I’m supposed to believe this is secure and unpetulant behaviour from an adult woman?” questioned a third music fan.
While another hit out: “There’s something exceptionally bizarre about Taylor Swift, anyone else gets a crumb of spotlight (Charli XCX) and she pulls s**t like this.”
However, others have claimed the release of the special editions was just a “coincidence” and that the backlash is just reminiscent of Swift’s “Reputation era”.
