Singer Kacy Hill has opened up about the six-month ordeal she claims she had to go through in her efforts to extricate herself from Kanye West’s record label.

Speaking onstage at a recent concert, the US indie singer-songwriter revealed she had to go to extreme lengths to get herself off West’s label Good Music.

Hill had released her debut album Like A Woman on the label in 2017. Despite strong reviews, it failed to chart.

She explained that, as preparations were underway to release her second album, those at the label – an offshoot of music industry giant Def Jam – got cold feet and said they were unsure whether they wanted to proceed with the release. She responded that it was fine with her too, and she’d be happy to leave the record label.

But there was one problem. The two parties couldn’t mutually part ways, she was told, without West’s sign-off.

“I was like, no problem. However, at that time he decided he didn’t want to use email and he also didn’t have an assistant,” Hill revealed of the notoriously erratic rapper, mogul and sometime presidential candidate.

Hill knew she’d have to see West face-to-face, and so went to the one place she knew she’d be able to find him: His weekly ‘Sunday service’ religious gatherings in Los Angeles.

She went … and went, for around six months. Hill explained that attending the gospel-infused concerts “was like going to someone’s wedding with a contract in your hand.”

She said that time after time, she’d approach West at the events, ask to talk business and be met with not much more than a shrug.

Eventually, she said West told her to “come to rehearsal on Friday.” There was no further instruction, so on the day she headed to his office in Calabasas. He was there, and asked her why she had come.

Finally, she had the chance to explain her predicament, telling him she needed to be released from her recording contract with Good Music.

“He was like, ‘Okay, what do I need to do?’ I was like, ‘You can text literally anyone and say that I’m done’ and so he did.”

Deal done, and it only took six months of church every Sunday to do it. There was a happy ending for Hill, who’s since released three more albums, two entirely by herself and her latest on the boutique record label Nettwerk.

Times appear tougher for Good Music which, despite a roster that at one point boasted acts including John Legend, Mos Def, Pusha T, Big Sean and many others, now has just two acts signed.

Last year, a video from 2018 leaked online in which West slammed the record label during a phone call with former manager Scooter Braun. In it, he demanded Braun “get me out of this motherf**king GOOD Music s**t now.

“I need to get rid of GOOD Music because I’m great. And guess what good is? The enemy of great,” he said.
