She’s one of the most polarising women in pop. Now Miley Cyrus has revealed more about her life, career and infamous mullet hair cut.

Exclusive: The Miley Cyrus mullet makeover was inevitable.

The fearless musician, actor and activist debuted her coiffure du jour last year as the world shut down and a visit to the hairdressers was not an option.

She engaged her mum to give her a trim and Tish Cyrus’s styling skills have been honed shaping the signature mullet locks of country music superstar dad Billy Ray over the decades.

Cyrus gave her father his due credit with a social media tribute last month, thanking him for “teaching me the true meaning of the mullet”.

“For me, the mullet and honestly all of my styling and creative direction is just about expressing yourself and who you are in that moment,” she says.

The 28-year-old chart-topper has embraced all of the opportunities to express herself over the past year.

She exorcised the demons of her divorce from Australian actor Liam Hemsworth on her seventh studio record Plastic Hearts, released a few months after her amicable split from Olympics swimming aspirant and pop singer Cody Simpson.

Alongside her own musical output, Cyrus has also thrown herself into collaboration.

She teamed with Australia’s global pop prince The Kid Laroi to reboot his single Without You, which was already at half a billion streams when they hooked up in the studio.

Their joint version released in April propelled the song to No. 1 on the ARIA singles chart, six months after its initial release last December.

Cyrus has always enjoyed a close connection to Australia – even before her relationship with Hemsworth – and said she was keen to explore other Down Under collaborations.

“I love learning about and supporting new artists, and Without You really stood out to me sonically. I felt like it was a song and a narrative that I could really add to,” she said.

“I think we all can relate to heartbreak and relationship issues, and I loved connecting with Laroi on ideas to see his creative process as well. The song went to number one, so that was really cool to see.

“There’s tons of amazing talented Australian artists I’d love to work with. It’d be great to work more with Kid Laroi for sure though.”

The dexterity of Cyrus’s voice and musical talent was again on full display this month when her take on Nothing Else Matters launched as the lead single from the upcoming tribute record The Metallica Blacklist, part of the celebration of 30th anniversary of the legendary rock band’s The Black Album.

The soaring, orchestral rendition also features Elton John, hit-making producer WATT, Yo-Yo Ma, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

“I have been fortunate to be able to become close friends with many of my idols over my lifetime, whether that’s Metallica, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks, Billy Idol, Elton John and more,” she said of the project.

“I’m so grateful to have their support, and also to be able to learn from them and their stories.”

That rock adventure was an almost perfect segue from her guitar-heavy Plastic Hearts album which featured Jett, Nicks, Dua Lipa and Billy Idol.

While there are more young women picking up guitars now and pushing the boundaries of what rock music sounds like in the streaming era, Cyrus said there were still obstacles to female and POC artists who want to rock’n’roll.

“It is amazing to be able to work with women such as Joan Jett, who truly has paved the way for so many women and people in general who go against what people ‘say’ they should act, look, dress, and talk like. I think there is still always more work to be done, but we wouldn’t be here today without Joan and others pushing the boundaries and redefining the space,” she said.

While she has some festival sets lined up in America in the coming months, Cyrus has flexed her performance muscle during Covid with television specials and pioneering online gigs.

Her Stand By You television performance for Pride month in the US and watched around the world featured brilliant covers of Madonna, Cher, ABBA, Blondie and George Michael.

And she hooked up with luxury ice-cream brand Magnum for the Miley In Layers online concert, filmed using the latest 8D spatial sound.

The music community has shaken off its historic opposition to partnering with brands – considered selling out in the alternative 90s – driven by the necessity to find new income streams because of poor returns from streaming and because of the very healthy budgets they offer to do cool stuff.

“I try to always partner with brands who I share similar values and beliefs with.

“Magnum’s focus on ‘layers’ is definitely something I identify with, as I think we are all made up of so many different experiences, backgrounds that make us who we are.

“And that’s a beautiful thing,” she said.

Cyrus was quick to pivot to the online space when Covid hit, launching her IGTV series Bright Minded, raiding her contacts list to enlist celebrities including Hailey Bieber, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and Jimmy Fallon to discuss mental health, wellness issues and chit chat about their lives.

An advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, climate change, homelessness and mental health, she was determined to arm her fanbase with information and positivity, which was no mean feat when almost everything she does attracts as many haters as it does lovers.

“I thought during Covid, what if I could use my platform and my voice – even if it’s not performing or concerts right now – to bring good information, positivity, and ways for us to all be involved and take action and keep ourselves as healthy as possible during this pandemic?” she said.

“I know I’m so lucky to have access to a therapist so I thought – let’s use Instagram Live and share him and his advice with the world. And then it became talking with other people about their experiences too.

“But it really started from a place of wanting to learn and share how to cope with the sudden change that the pandemic brought and how we could all stay focused on taking care of ourselves.”

Again, she credits her father Billy Ray with arming her with the resilience to put herself out there knowing social media trolls are just waiting to pile on.

“My dad has always given me amazing advice when it comes to being your authentic, unapologetic self, and knowing who you are. He always told me it isn’t about thinking outside the box, there is no box. And that’s always really stuck with me,” she said.

Cyrus joked last week that her father may not always appreciate her often hilarious antics in the name of self-expression.

To promote her new line of “Miley made me gay” merchandise, she posed on the bonnet of his truck wearing Gucci heels, which she carefully angled upwards to prevent denting or scratching its surface.

The family home in Nashville is clearly a sanctuary.

“My simple pleasures are really spending time with my dogs and my family, and being in an environment where I feel like I am constantly being challenged to learn and grow,” she said.
