MIDNIGHT Oil have answered the pleas of fans facing the prospect of paying for exorbitant scalper tickets for sold-out gigs with extra concerts in Sydney and Melbourne.

The band members were frustrated to see tickets land on resale sites within minutes of eight shows on the tour selling out on Monday, despite introducing several measures to counteract bots and potential scalpers buying up seats.

COMEBACK: Midnight Oil to return to the stage

On Ticketmaster Resale and viagogo, tickets to shows ranged from close to $300 up to $900 for what was meant to be the final show on the tour in Sydney’s Domain on November 11.

The top official price for tickets in Sydney was $149.90 with 90 per cent of tickets available at $79.90 or $99.90.

The resale tickets were being offered despite the fact the sellers do not yet have them in hand and won’t receive them until after August 1. And the tickets will also be branded with the names and address of the buyer.

It is understood the band and promoters are examining legal options to void scalped tickets.

“The band has been overwhelmed by the public response to this tour but they’re also incredibly frustrated that scalping continues to be such a problem despite all their efforts. It just goes to show that government action is needed urgently to stop the reselling rorts that are hurting both artists and ticket buyers,” the Oils said in a statement.

The good news for the passionate Oils fans who missed out in Sydney and Melbourne is the band have made good on their promise to add concerts to the Australian leg of their reunion tour.

The new shows will be at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne on November 8 and Domain in Sydney on November 17.

Frontier Touring and Midnight Oil subscribers can buy pre-sale tickets from 1pm on Monday with General tickets on sale from 1pm on March 8.

To accommodate the new shows, the Wollongong Entertainment Centre concert on November 8 has been moved to November 13, with all tickets valid for the new date. Fans who can’t make that show now can seek a refund by March 31.

The band also announced extra tickets have been released for their Big Pineapple Fields concerts on October 14 and are now available.

The Oils again reiterated their message to fans to not buy tickets from unauthorised resellers.

“Such tickets are sometimes fake and they’re usually very overpriced. There will be thousands of extra tickets released for Sydney and Melbourne early next week and there are still dates around the country that have not sold out yet,” they said.

“So there’s simply no need for fans to pay more for tickets at the moment and they won’t have to pay more providing they follow the official ticketing links listed at www.midnightoil.com.”

The immediate appearance of the Oils tickets on resale sites has many in the industry perplexed as to how the scalpers manage to jump the online queues.

Many fans have also been confused by the fact the resale sites appear in the top results for any internet search for Midnight Oil tickets instead of official ticketing agencies.
