Australian singer-songwriter Sam Fischer has spoken publicly about his sexuality for the first time in a candid new interview, revealing that he and his wife Erin are “not straight.”
Fischer, 33, who is best known for the platinum-selling Aussie hits This City and What Other People Say, spoke to former Rolling Stone Australia editor Poppy Reid for the first episode of her On The Record podcast.
He revealed that he’s been “playing around” with his sexuality and explains what that means for his marriage with his partner of more than a decade, Erin.
“You know, I’m not totally straight. And I’ve never said that on the record anywhere … I think I’m just more accepting of myself now,” he said.
“I’m just figuring it all out. And this is the other thing: Technically I’m in a straight marriage … But we’re not straight, and we’re having the f**king time of our lives with it.”
Fischer said that the realisation about his sexuality came relatively recently, after he wrote the 2023 single Afterglow (sample lyric: “Now I, I have to know / What the feeling’s like / In your afterglow”) – a song he now dubs his “realisation anthem.”
Fischer said nowadays he’s “really trying to focus on the joy” in his life – and that includes “playing around” with his sexuality.
“And I also think I’ve just hit an age where I’m saying, ‘F**k it.” Let me be me. I don’t give a f**k anymore,” he explained.
He said that his marriage to wife Erin was “better than ever”: “She’s my f**king rock. She’s incredible.”
Fischer said there are “no rules” in his marriage, as he and his wife navigated what his sexuality meant for their relationship.
“I overthink this s**t so much. Being like, ‘I’m in a straight marriage,’ so I don’t want to say I’m this or that. But I’m at the point where I just don’t give a f**k. I’m going to be who I am. And if anyone has a problem with that, that’s on them,” he said.
And so far, the reaction has been quite the opposite.
Fischer said he’d been overwhelmed with support since the podcast debuted yesterday, writing on Instagram that he’d woken up to “an immense amount of love” and thanking his fans for “always being proud” of him.
You can listen to Fischer’s full interview in the debut episode of the On The Record podcast.
