Little Mix release new single Break Up Song while in self-isolation

UK pop band Little Mix has released a new single Break Up Song but due to self isolating at home, the four members haven’t even seen each other for a while. Singer Jesy Nelson says they can’t record the rest of their album until quarantine restrictions are lifted.

‘What is it like over there?” Little Mix pop star Jesy Nelson asks on the phone from her London quarantine.

Nelson is genuinely interested to hear news from Australia. She’s been quarantined at home in London with her mum for the past few weeks as the number of coronavirus cases in the UK climbs above 25,000.

“It is just deserted,” she says.

“No one is out, there’s literally like one car driving down the road, it is really strange. I am at home with my mum so all we have been doing is eating and just finding things on Netflix to watch.

“I have had an Easter egg every day and it is not even Easter. It is the weirdest thing. I keep thinking that when this is all over, we are going to look back and think it was the strangest time ever.”

It is indeed a strange time with the four group members of Little Mix in self-isolation as they release catchy new single, Break Up Song.

The girls — Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall — wrote the song a while back but it took a back seat as they focused on writing new tracks.

“We were listening to all the songs we had and every one was great but we couldn’t decide which would be the single,” Nelson explains.

“I think Break Up Song is a really feel good song. I love the concept and I just hope it does well and everyone loves it. It is a break-up song, don’t worry, you are going to get over it and get over whatever you are going through. Have fun and don’t let anyone or anything get you down, that is how I see it.”

Nelson is not in need of a break-up song as she is very much in love with boyfriend, former British Love Island contestant Chris Hughes.

“My love life is fine and dandy,” she says.

“Chris isn’t with me right now because he is in isolation with his flatmate so I haven’t seen him for a while.”

Usually Little Mix would hit the road to support a new single, visiting radio stations for promo trips and showcase gigs across the world.

For now though, as the COVID-19 crisis continues, Nelson and her bandmates can only watch from home as Break Up Song finds its way across the world.

“Hopefully they will find a cure for it and everyone will bloody listen and stay indoors,” Nelson says.

“At the moment people aren’t bloody listening, they are still going out and going on trains.”

It has been a while since Nelson has seen her bandmates, although she thinks the break might do them some good.

“In a way right, because I feel like we’ve worked so hard, I feel like it is quite a good detox for us,” she says.

“I feel like we are going to appreciate everything so much more when we are allowed to come back to work again.”

The group were part way through shooting Little Mix The Search, a reality singing show searching for the next big pop group. That too unfortunately has been affected by coronavirus.

“We prerecorded all the auditions so they are all ready to go out and we were going to do the live shows after that but now because no one knows what is going on, I am assuming that is going to be pushed back,” she says.

“Everything is just up in the air, our tour, there is so much we don’t know what is going to happen with at the moment.”

The band has a whole album of new songs ready to go, and as soon as quarantine restrictions are lifted will head into the studio to record.

“We have recorded about half of it and obviously old corona came and we couldn’t finish the rest,” Nelson says.

“We are just waiting for this to go away and we can get back to normal, finish the album and put it out. It has loads of really good feel-good songs on there, obviously a few good girl power anthems on there, a mix of everything. There’s not really a theme, it is just a really good feel-good album.”
