The ARIA Awards are courting Kylie Minogue to be their Queen at this year’s celebration with the pop superstar one of the leading nominees for 2024.
Minogue has been approached to come home for the November 20 awards in Sydney where she is up for five awards, including Album of the Year for Tension, the first time she has received a nod in the prestigious category since 2002.
“‘This is beyond! I’m overwhelmed with the news that I am nominated in five categories at this year’s ARIA Awards. Wow! And thrilled to be amongst such wonderful company,” she said.
Minogue is on fire in Australia right now with extra shows being added to her Tension tour next year after huge pre-sale demand and the pop phenomenon gearing up for a No.1 record when she releases her new Tension II album on October 18.
Leading the field for the 2024 ARIAs with eight nominations is Sydney duo Royel Otis who have blown up worldwide this year with their debut album Pratts and Pain, and caught fire on American and UK radio with their indie rock covers of Sophie Ellis Bextor’ Murder on the Dancefloor and The Cranberries’ Linger.
Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic have become one of Australia’s biggest music exports this year with more than 500 million streams worldwide and are on their second sold-out tour of America before heading to Europe.
“It’s overwhelming and super weird; how the f... does anyone in Chicago know who we are?” Maddell said.
“We are so grateful for those songs because we love them and they have brought a larger audience to our own originals.”
The pair are huge Kylie fans and will be competing with their Queen for the Album of the Year prize.
“Every time she has been on the ARIAs I have been in awe,” Pavlovic said. “We saw her play at a festival in Budapest last month and I was dancing my arse off. I think I would vomit from the excitement of meeting her.”
The 2024 ARIAs nominations list reflects the diversity of Australian talent from global stars including Troye Sivan, Tones and I, Dom Dolla, the Kid Laroi and Rufus Du Sol through to exciting emerging artists including hip hop trio 3% and pop singer songwriter Kita Alexander.
Alexander is up for the Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist award and nominated alongside Australian DJ superstar Fisher in two categories for their track Atmosphere.
“I didn’t believe it … am I really nominated? It feels surreal … last year I just loved meeting Troye Sivan and I love the whole red carpet drama,” she said.
It is a watershed year for beloved country music star Troy Cassar-Daley who will contest three awards – it is the first time in his 30-year recording history where he has been nominated for ARIAs outside of the Best Country Album category.
He still treasures the memory of his first ARIAs in 1995 when he won Best Country Album with his debut record Beyond The Dancing.
“My first ARIAs I went in a Vinnies jacket I bought in Manly and it was so humbling to get there, and only have that sort of thing to wear and then to win, it’s something I’ll never forget,” he said.
Amy Shark will contest four awards this year, having previously won eight trophies from 32 nods and cites the Album of the Year, which she won with her debut album Love Monster in 2018, as her most prized nomination.
“I’m honestly always surprised because you really don’t know. You put out the best art you can and because everyone is always changing, you never know if you’re still hitting the spot with other people,” she said.
Exciting hip hop artist Kobie Dee is one of this year’s first-time nominees who dreamt of being recognised by his peers when he attended last year as a guest.
“Last year I came down to the ARIAs and remember telling a few people ‘Next year I’m going to be get nominated’,” he said.
“I remember when I was young, hip hop in this country wasn’t as big and when I told people I was going to be a rapper, they laughed. Now to be nominated for an award, that just shows that following your dreams will take you to the ARIAs.”
The 2024 ARIA Awards will be held in Sydney on November 20 and broadcast on Stan and Nine.
