Dragon weighs in after Scott Morrison performs their song on ukulele

The band behind the song Scott Morrison performed during a Sunday night interview has weighed in with a brutal sledge.

Scott Morrison has been slammed for a “cynical move” following an intimate television profile of the Prime Minister and his family.

During an interview on 60 Minutes that aired on Sunday, Mr Morrison and his wife Jenny were asked about Brittany Higgins, Grace Tame and Mr Morrison’s character as well as the family’s infamous holiday to Hawaii during the Black Summer bushfires.

Later, sitting around a dinner table, Mr Morrison pulled out a ukulele and strummed and sang along to New Zealand rock band Dragon’s hit song April Sun in Cuba.

On Monday morning, the band weighed in – first sharing a TikTok video in which Mr Morrison plays the instrument in front of superimposed images of the bushfires.

“Once again, Dragon are famous for all the wrong reasons,” the band captioned their Instagram post.

They went a step further hours later, issuing a public statement in which they criticised Mr Morrison for “co-opting” their music in an “attempt to humanise” himself.

“Like many times before, Dragon is back in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. This time, it’s Scott Morrison’s interpretation of April Sun in Cuba, written by two New Zealanders living in Australia (Paul Hewson, Marc Hunter, both since passed) about a long-ago diplomatic fracas on the other side of the world,” the band wrote.

“It is a cynical move for a politician to co-opt music in an attempt to humanise themselves come election time.

“Maybe if his trip had not been cut short, he could have learnt the lyrics to the rest of the chorus: ‘Take me where the April sun gonna treat me so right, so right, so right’.”

While the Morrisons apologised for their trip to Hawaii during the interview, the use of the ukulele seemed pointed.

In the lead-up the interview, commentators had linked the Hawaiian musical instrument to the ill-fated trip during the deadly bushfires.

After asking the couple what they might find time to do if they lose the next election, Stefanovic then adds, “You could go to Hawaii!”

“Too soon,” Mrs Morrison said.

Earlier, Mrs Morrison acknowledged how the couple had “disappointed” the Australian public with their holiday.

“I am more than sorry if we disappointed,” she said.

“We did disappoint. Did we make the right decision? I thought I was making the right decision for my kids. I obviously was wrong. Yes, we were over there seeing it and we were like … we really need to get home.

“So … I wish that had never happened. But I can’t change it.”
