A bullet proof vest and matching face mask is possibly the last outfit you’d expect to see at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. But Mariah Carey’s ex Nick Cannon did it anyway.

Sparkly mini dresses, sheer gowns, statement shoes and a face mask … style at the MTV Movie & TV Awards was anything but dull.

Mariah Carey’s ex-husband Nick Cannon sported a bizarre Louis Vuitton bullet proof vest complete with a leather facial cover (and matching monogram sneakers), in an outfit likened to Mortal Combat.

A source told News Corp Australia the Louis Vuitton outfit was likely to have been custom-made for the TV host, with a $50,000 price-tag.

Juice singer Lizzo dazzled in a feathered lime green dress by Christopher John Rogers, which she wore with sneakers, as she rushed past reporters in Los Angeles.

Former The OC star Mischa Barton made her return to the spotlight as a reality TV star, wearing a black lace Ralph & Russo gown.

Barton, 33, stars in MTV’s The Hills: New Beginnings — a rebooted version of the hit reality series.

She was joined by her Hills co-stars Brandon Lee, Brody Jenner and Justin ‘Bobby’ Brescia, who wore biker boots.

The look was on-brand for the hairdresser-turned-reality TV star, who famously once wore “combat boots to the beach”.

Not everyone knew how to behave though. An unidentified guest spat at celebrity fitness trainer Jas Mathur as he posed on the red carpet, with a WWE wrestler intervening to stop the near-brawl.

Back to the fashion. The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss traded her usually conservative style for a sleeved Balmain mini-dress with a silver dragon print, teamed with a pair of Louboutin heels.

Aubrey Plaza continued the mini dress trend as Tiffany Haddish glittered in silver and Men In Black actor Tessa Thompson wore a blazer as a dress.

The awards, hosted by Zachary Levi, were staged in a converted aeroplane hanger at Santa Monica Airport.

‘IT’S A TRIP’: BEST MOMENTS AT THE MTV MOVIE & TV AWARDS

Girls Trip star Jada Pinkett Smith was honoured with the Trailblazer award, which recognises “game-changing creators with fresh and fearless voices in entertainment”.

“It’s a trip, because when MTV called me to receive an award for trailblazing, I was like, ‘I don’t know if I deserve this quite yet,’” Pinkett Smith told the crowd.

“But then I had to think — I said, ‘Jada, why don’t you think you deserve this award?’ And it was because I was comparing myself to all the many trailblazers that I admire,” she said.

“Often we applaud the trails people blaze in the external world that we can see, but very rarely do we applaud the trails that are blazed in the hidden rooms of the mind that are full of uncertainty, false beliefs, and pain,” Pinkett Smith added, as her son Jaden Smith stood with her on the stage.

“It’s these internal obstacles that must be challenged in order to muster the courage to forge new paths that we can see in the world,” she said.

Meantime, The Rock gave a provocative speech about not conforming to Hollywood stereotypes as he accepted the Generation award.

“When I first got to Hollywood — Hollywood, they didn’t know what the hell to do with me. I mean, I was this half-black, half-Samoan and six foot four, 275-pound pro wrestler,” The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson) said, to cheers from the VVVIP crowd.

“I was told at that time, ‘Well, you got to be a certain way. You got to drop some weight. You’ve got to be somebody different. You got to stop working out. Stop doing the things that I love. You got to stop calling yourself The Rock.’ What?!

“And for years I actually bought into it because you think, ‘Oh, that’s what I’m supposed to do.’ And I was miserable doing that. So I made a choice.

“And the choice was I wasn’t going to conform to Hollywood, Hollywood was going to conform to me.

“So, Hollywood conformed to me and here I am with all of you … Holy s***.”

The MTV Movie & TV Awards air on Foxtel’s MTV channel and are repeated across the week.
