THE trailer for the long awaited sequel to Zoolander has dropped online, delighting fans of the 2001 breakout comedy.
An animated opening sequence with a Stephen Hawking-esque computerised voice gives little away about the movie.
“In the beginning there was nothing, an infinite void. And then in an instant everything known to man came into being ...” the computerised voice begins, as images of galaxies, human embryos and brain synapses swirl before the viewer.
For sharp-eyed viewers the first indication of what is to follow comes at the 50-second mark, as the dictionary definition of the word “eugoogly” flashes up on screen, referencing one of the original film’s funniest moments.
A succession of items appear, easily understood by the hardcore fan. A no-left-turn sign refers to the fact that Derek is not an “ambiturner” on the catwalk; an orange mocha frappucinno container references the “freak gasoline fight accident” scene of the first movie, and a swimming merman — sorry, merMAN — needs no explanation for the Zoolander tragics.
Finally the trailer reveals Stiller as Zoolander, still rocking the leopard-print coat, the distinctive stand-up hair (“the afro for the white man”) and of course his signature look, Blue Steel. (Or is it Magnum?)
“If God exists, why did he make ugly people,” he asks.
Justin Theroux, who played the murderous breakdance-fighting DJ in the first movie, is credited with the screenplay for Zoolander 2, which will be released on February 12, 2016.
Original cast members Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell and Christine Taylor are set to reprise their roles in the sequel, alongside newcomers Olivia Munn and Kristen Wiig.
Stiller and Wilson walked the catwalk in character during the Valentino show as part of Paris Fashion Week in March: just one of several real-life events set to be featured in the new movie.
