Wonder Woman’s screenwriter reveals he drew a lot of inspiration from The Little Mermaid

WHEN a movie is as much of a hit as Wonder Woman was, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that there’s some Disney inspiration involved.

WONDER Woman very easily became one of the best superhero movies to hit cinemas in recent years but what few people might realise is that the female-led flick actually drew a lot of inspiration from Disney and from one cartoon in particular.

Allan Heinberg, the screenwriter for Wonder Woman, recently sat down with Entertainment Weeklyand revealed that it was his love for The Little Mermaid that greatly influenced the superhero movie.

“The story as I see it is The Little Mermaid, specifically Disney’s incarnation,” he said.

“This is a woman who has been raised in a very protective, sheltered life, she’s curious about what life is like outside and she wants to have her own experience. She wants to be where the people are.”

For true Little Mermaid fans, Heinberg’s final quote would’ve immediately pushed the cartoon’s song Part of Your World into your head.

And if you needed any more proof that The Little Mermaid and Wonder Woman were connected, Twitter user @iamgeekingout recently posted a photo comparing scenes of the two movies.

The Little Mermaid wasn’t their only source of inspiration when it came to making Wonder Woman.

Producers also used the hit 1970s TV version of Wonder Woman as inspiration for the 2017 film, even dressing actress Gal Gadot in an almost exact replica of a dress Lynda Carter wore in an episode.
