HE’S only been Spider-Man for about five minutes, but already actor Tom Holland is giving away a few closely-guarded Spidey secrets — namely, what he wore under that iconic suit.
The answer, it seems, is “not much”. The British actor, 21, had such little wiggle room underneath his skin-tight costume, all he could wear was a G-string.
“The first thing you need to know, all I have on under that costume is a thong. They brought them in on my first day, like, ‘Here are your thongs.’ I had serious misgivings — would my a**hole ever be the same again? But I had to get used to it. Even though I was thinking no way, no way!” Holland told Shortlist in a recent interview.
It wasn’t easy getting in and out of the Spider-Man suit — which made toilet breaks quite the mission.
“You have to completely disrobe and then put a dressing gown on, but they’re very comfy ones, you can’t walk around in just a thong, can you imagine? And then you race across the lot to the toilet, then come back, get back into it — it’s such a mission.”
Not that Holland needed to pop for a wee much when he was filming — the confines of the suit made it near-impossible for him to have a drink of water. He had to make do with occasional drips of hydration coming from a plastic tube fed through his suit by an assistant.
“The suit really is a work of art, but wearing it is so unbelievably uncomfortable,” he told Shortlist.
No pain, no gain — and it appears Holland’s discomfort has paid off, with Spider-Man: Homecoming earning strong early reviews. News Crop’s film writer Vicky Roach praised the reboot’s ‘natural and unforced humour’ in a three-and-a-half star review.
