ACTOR Stephen Curry has revealed his favourite line from the 1997 Australian comedy classic The Castle — and it’s one even the most avid fans of the film probably haven’t picked up on before.
Curry played Dale, the hole-digging, perpetually curious youngest son of the Kerrigan clan in the much-loved box office hit. In a radio interview with Triple M’s Merrick which will air today, the actor revealed that a one-liner aimed at Dale from Eric Bana’s Con — partially obscured by a voiceover — was his favourite line from the quotable film, and one that he and Bana have discussed together in the years since.
It comes during the family’s holiday in Bonnie Doon, as they huddle around the dinner table. Con, who recently wed Tracey Kerrigan (Sophie Lee), is telling the family about one particular highlight of their honeymoon — their hotel had a channel which played kickboxing 24 hours a day.
The dialogue gets quieter in the scene as Dale’s voiceover narration kicks in, but if you listen hard you can hear this interchange between he and Con:
Dale: What channel was that?
Con [pointedly]: ONE OF THEM.
“It’s the one moment in the whole thing where one of the family members says, ‘SHUT UP YOU STUPID ...’ It’s beautifully covered up by the voiceover, but I know it’s there,” Curry says. “Eric and I have discussed it, and it’s one of his favourite moments too — it’s like, he’s not from this family, and this kid has asked one [too many] ... it’s the straw that broke the camel’s back.”
We’ll admit, we never noticed this perfect little interplay between the two characters either. Just wait til we tell Jenny. Jenny Jenny? No, microwave Jenny.
