What’s your favourite scary movie?
If your answer is Scream, then are you in for a treat.
The trailer for Scream 5 has dropped and it’s dripping with portent and doom – and, of course, blood curdling screams.
It reunites returning favourites Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette with a cast of newcomers to the franchise, including Jack Quaid, Melissa Berrera, Mason Gooding, Dylan Minette and Jenna Ortega.
If the trailer is anything to go by, Ortega isn’t going to make it to the opening credits, joining the ranks of Drew Barrymore and Sarah Michelle Gellar as the sacrificial lambs to the horror movie gods.
The movie is set 25 years after Wes Craven’s original, and Woodsboro’s youth are once again being hunted by a killer wearing the Ghostface mask.
The original trio are called back to Woodsboro and are seen giving a pep talk to the new would-be victims. As Dewey (Arquette) lays it out, “There are certain rules to surviving”.
And, just like in the previous instalments, the killer is someone they know.
Scream 5 – technically titled just Scream, because, well, Halloween did it so why can’t they – is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind the devilishly entertaining Ready or Not. It’s the first film in the franchise that isn’t directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015.
Craven’s 1996 original was a huge success and kickstarted the resurgence of the teen slasher genre which also included I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween H20, Urban Legend and The Faculty.
Three sequels followed in 1997, 2000 and 2011, and a three-season anthology TV series.
Scream 5 will be in cinemas on January 13
