Reese Witherspoon has lifted the lid on one of her past hosting disasters, revealing a Hollywood star once refused to leave her house during a party.
The actress, 48, stars alongside Will Ferrell in Prime Video’s You’re Cordially Invited, a comedy about the chaos that ensues when two weddings are accidentally booked on the same day at the same venue.
Both parties, led by widower (Ferrell), who is organising his beloved daughter’s nuptials, and Witherspoon, a TV executive who’s doing the same for her sister, agree to share the venue – but tensions hit the roof as everything starts to go wrong.
While obviously not quite on the same scale as the truly catastrophic events of the film, both Witherspoon and Ferrell can relate to events going awry.
“There was this one actress that would not leave my house,” Witherspoon told news.com.au at the UK special screening of You’re Cordially Invited in London this week. While she wouldn’t name the party-lingerer, she admitted: “I eventually just had to turn off the lights!”
Witherspoon added that she’d also almost ruined Christmas just last month, by “almost burning down someone’s house” – thankfully, “by accident”.
Ferrell, on the other hand, confessed he’s a serial offender of serving food to guests that was “completely undercooked”.
“We’ve had many events at our house [that went wrong] … it all circles around cooking,” he told news.com.au.
Reuniting for the first time since a joint appearance on a 2001 Saturday Night Live episode, Witherspoon and Ferrell bring plenty of laughs with their on-screen bante in You’re Cordially Invited.
The film was written and directed by Nicholas Stoller, and along with its lead stars, features Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, Stony Blyden, Leanne Morgan, Rory Scovel, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ramona Young, Jack McBrayer and Celia Weston.
You’re Cordially Invited will be available to stream on Prime Video from January 30.
