Netflix documentary ‘Hot Girls Wanted’ exposes behind the scenes look at amateur porn industry
“BARELY legal” women are entering the amateur porn scene to make money but they’re being exploited by an industry that uses their naivety.
“IT’S gone mainstream.”
That’s the message about amateur porn presented in a new documentary that pulls back the curtain on an industry turning young girls into stars. At least, temporarily.
Hot Girls Wanted follows the journeys of five young women termed “barely legal” by the porn industry. The girls, who admit they want to be famous, embark on their first photo shoots and film their first videos for a producer who declares in disturbing candour that “every day a new girl turns 18”.
In a trailer for the film, which was produced by Hollywood actor Rashida Jones, a young woman admits she did not know what she was getting into after stumbling upon an ad on Craigslist.
“It was under TV shows and radio jobs,” she says. “It didn’t hit me until I got on the plane.”
She was headed to Florida, where the porn industry is booming and there is no shortage of young women vying for a spot in front of the camera.
Among the young women profiled in the documentary is Ava Taylor.
Taylor, who has more than 11,000 devoted followers on Twitter despite tweeting just once, admitted during filming that she does things she does not like doing.
“That last part I hated,” she says. “I didn’t know if I could tell him ‘no’.”
She later says “I’m trying to be famous so you gotta do what you gotta do”.
Another young girl featured in the film is “Tressa”, a 19-year-old cheerleader who enters the industry with her hopes high and dreams of stardom and exits disillusioned.
The lure is cold hard cash, a point drilled home in the trailer by a cigar-toting male porn star who declares: “A lot of them know it’s a trap but the money’s there in their face right now, cash. They take it”.
He says the girls have an expiry date and most last “one year, tops”.
The Sundance-nominated documentary looks not only at the girls in front of the camera but at the people producing the films and luring in the “talent”.
Talent agent “Riley” admits: “I only work with amateur girls brand new to the industry. I call them teeny boppers’.”
But it’s the way he gets them in that is particularly disturbing for many viewers. Riley, 23, posts ads on websites offering free travel. They need only be 18 and “hot” and they’re in.
According to Reality and Risk, an Australian-based project aimed at understanding the link between pornography and the sexualisation of young women, more than 90 per cent of boys and 60 per cent of girls have watched pornography online. Of those videos, more than 88 per cent include physical aggression.
Stella May, one of the girls profiled in Hot Girls Wanted is shown breaking the news to a loved one that she had to perform a sex act featuring bondage.
“Today was just so horrible,” she says. But the girls around her rally to support her. “You still got it done,” they say.
Another says she can’t believe she gets paid to have sex with strangers, a novelty clearly not lost on those new to the job.
“It just can’t be good for you to have sex with that many people. It’s so weird that that’s my job.”
