Emerging actor Timothee Chalamet has given fans a sneak peek of himself as Willy Wonka.
The 25-year-old Oscar nominated star will play the iconic character in Warner Bros.’ upcoming film Wonka, which is currently filming in the UK and will be released in 2023.
Chalamet, who is also starring in the upcoming blockbuster Dune, follows in the footsteps of the late Gene Wilder, who played the confectionary king in the 1971 original movie, and Johnny Depp, who stepped in for the 2005 remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The Call Me By Your Name actor certainly looks the part in a new portrait taken behind the scenes, which shows him donning a deep purple velvet coat, brown top hat and patterned scarf.
Wonka is being directed by Paul King (Paddington, Paddington 2), and will co-star Olivia Colman, Matt Lucas, Rowan Atkinson and Sally Hawkins.
While the last two movies followed a similar storyline of an already established Willy Wonka, Wonka will focus on the character in his younger years, following how he met the Oompa-Loompas and ultimately built his sweet empire.
It’s also set to feature musical and dance numbers throughout.
In what might be a welcome relief for Chalamet – who managed to score the part ahead of Spider-Man star Tom Holland – the book’s author Roald Dahl will not be around to critique the new movie.
Despite getting paid a whopping $400,000 for movie rights to his book ($4.75 million adjusted for inflation), according to Storyteller: The Authorized Biography of Roald Dahl, the famed novelist watched the 1971 film and disliked the music, changes to his narrative and even the casting of Wilder.
In summation, Dahl, who died in 1990, had a one-word description of the effort: “Crummy.”
