If you were in raptures over Bohemian Rhaposdy and rocked by Rocketman, the good news is many more rock biopics and musical movies are about to hit our screens.
Freddie Mercury epic Bohemian Rhapsody was the surprise smash-hit of last year, taking over $1.3 billion worldwide, on a budget of $74 million and becoming the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. Despite being panned by critics it took home four Oscars, including best actor for Rami Malek.
The Elton John biopic Rocketman starring Taron Egerton, Richard Madden and Jamie Bell meanwhile, is proving as popular, opening in Australia a week ago.
Next comes the highly-anticipated Brit flick Yesterday, a Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle collaboration, which is a quirky romcom built around The Beatles’ hits.
And not forgetting The Dirt, the entertaining tale of Motley Crue’s rise and fall, out now on Netflix.

THE BEATLES: YESTERDAY
Starring Himesh Patel and Lily James
Opening June 27, this fun British movie by Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle follows the story of Jack Malik who wakes up one day to discover he’s the only man in the world who remembers The Beatles. Not a biopic but more a charming love letter to the Fab Four.
JUDY GARLAND: JUDY
Starring Renee Zellweger
This film revolves around Judy Garland’s sold-out concert series in London in 1968 and a transformed Renee Zellweger belts out Garland’s classic hits like Over the Rainbow. It’s in cinemas in October.
HELEN REDDY: I AM WOMAN
Starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey
The story behind the iconic Australian who wrote the anthem for the women’s movement – I Am Woman follows Helen Reddy’s incredible journey to international fame in the 1960s and ’70s. It will be released later this year.
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: BLINDED BY THE LIGHT
Starring Viveik Kalra
In the same vein as Yesterday, another Brit flick by Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha is an ode to Bruce Springsteen. Set in 1980s Britain it follows Javed, a teenager obsessed by The Boss. Currently screening at Sydney Film Festival, it opens in August.
WHAM!: LAST CHRISTMAS
Starring Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson
Continuing the trend of “inspired by the music of” movies, comes Last Christmas, co-written and starring Emma Thompson alongside Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke. This romantic comedy follows hapless Kate who works as a Santa elf and is set to Wham! and George Michael tracks – the late singer gave his blessing before he passed away. It is released in November.
DAVID BOWIE: STARDUST
Starring Johnny Flynn
Stardust is a “moment in time” movie, about Bowie’s 1971 tour of the USA. However, fans wanting to hear the iconic singer’s classic tracks will be disappointed as his son Duncan Jones says the movie has not secured music rights. The release date is to be confirmed.
DUSTY SPRINGFIELD: SO MUCH LOVE
Starring Gemma Arterton
Set in 1968, the film follows British soul singer Dusty Springfield’s journey to Memphis, Tennessee to record her opus, Dusty in Memphis. Gemma Arterton stars and will sing some of her greatest hits. The release date is to be confirmed.
CELINE DION: THE POWER OF LOVE
Starring Valerie Lemercier
This movie, personally endorsed by Celine Dion, follows the French-Canadian singer’s upbringing in Quebec and her rise to fame. It is due to be released next year.
ARETHA FRANKLIN: RESPECT
Starring Jennifer Hudson
Aretha Franklin picked Jennifer Hudson to play her before she passed away last year. The movie will cover her early life and rise to fame as a singer and civil rights activist. It will be released next year.
ALSO BEING COMPOSED:
Elvis Presley: Baz Luhrmann is taking on the task of telling the story of Elvis, with Tom Hanks down to play Colonel Tom Parker.
Prince: As well as a documentary on Netflix, Universal Pictures is planning a movie inspired by the music of Prince, Mamma Mia! style. Although Bruno Mars was rumoured to be playing the pint-sized singer, no-one has been cast yet.
Amy Winehouse: Her father Mitch said the time was right to finally tell his daughter’s tragic life story and Monumental Pictures’ Alison Owen is producing the as yet untitled movie.
Bob Marley: Legendary reggae star Bob Marley will be the topic of a new movie produced by his son Ziggy.
Boy George: The latest biopic to be announced is the story of Boy George, written and directed by Sacha Gervasi. The Culture Club singer said it was “thrilling”.
