IT’S the movie everyone’s talking about and for all the right reasons.
Baby Driver, which has been hailed by critics as “one of the most entertaining thrill rides of this century”, is about a young getaway driver working for a crime boss who finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.
The movie stars Ansel Elgort as Baby and the 23-year-old actor is surrounded by an incredible cast which includes Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lily James.
News.com.au sat down with Ansel Elgort and Lily James who shared their favourite memories about each of their famous co-stars.
JAMIE FOXX
According to Lily James, Jamie Foxx was largely responsible for keeping everyone in a good mood on the set of Baby Driver.
“He had a kind of boom box that he came in with and he’d play in between setups when usually it’s really boring and the energy drops,” James said.
“He would play music and keep the whole energy not only of the cast but the crew up and it was so brilliant.”
The boom box was such a hit that Ansel Elgort tried to adopt the tactic on the set of the film he did straight after Baby Driver but it didn’t quite work out.
“On my next film I tried to do the same thing on the first day,” Elgort told news.com.au.
“I brought a big sound system and I started playing music. It was the very beginning of the shoot and the assistant director was like, ‘Who is playing music? ... Can you turn that off please.’ I was like, ‘I’m just trying to lighten the ...’ and he was like, ‘people can’t focus with all this music playing!’”
It was at this point, Elgort said, that he realised, “I’m not Jamie Foxx, I can’t do this”.
FLEA
In addition to being an actor, Ansel Elgort is also a musician with eight singles to his name.
So it’s no surprise that he was in awe of Flea, the bassist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who plays a thief called Eddie in Baby Driver.
“It was actually Jamie [Foxx] who broke the ice for me,” Elgort said about meeting Flea on set.
Foxx told Flea about Elgort’s music and the RHCP star was more than happy to listen to the young actor’s records.
“Eventually we were talking about what we were doing one night and I said, ‘I’m actually going to be in the music studio tonight’,” Elgort recalled.
“And Flea was like, ‘Oh yeah, man? I’ll come by. I’ll go grab my bass.’ I was like, ‘oh my god.’
“We ended up having an epic night in the studio. Jamie [Foxx] heard and he wanted to come tag along and the three of us were in the studio. I have a great bass line I’m going to use on my album eventually that I will be putting together hopefully in the next few months.”
KEVIN SPACEY
The House of Cards star plays a criminal mastermind called Doc in Baby Driver and Elgort revealed that he struggled to keep a straight face during scenes with Kevin Spacey.
“We had one scene, it was actually the most serious scene,” Elgort said, “for whatever reason he just sort of made me laugh”.
“He’d just say funny little things and make me laugh and I had the giggles and there was uncontrollable laughing.”
But the director, Edgar Wright, wasn’t laughing and got a little frustrated with his lead actor.
“It was a day where we were pressed for time ... and I was dying of laughter and Edgar was like, ‘Come on Ansel, get it together.’ And then eventually he was like, ‘Ansel, can you please stop laughing!’”
